Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 3-9
The best part about a storm is the rainbow that comes afterward. This must have been the inspiration behind the naming of Rainbow Rhythm® Storm Shelter Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Storm Shelter').
Where do you even begin with this perennial? The dependable foliage, its premium performance, the excellent flower colors? Perhaps the fragrance? Oh no… It's definitely the flowers!
Storm Shelter has not one, not two, but three colors per petal! In fact, some could argue more than that! Each flower starts out a bright yellow near the throat before turning a quick mauve and fading to enormous deep eggplant purple edges.
As if that weren't enough flower power, each petal ends in a lighter purple rimmed with that dark purple making yet another appearance! You and everyone else will be entranced and drawn in by these blooms for a closer look!
These Daylilies sit on top of gorgeous green foliage that perfectly complements the extraordinary show they hold up. You'll never have to worry about your blooms looking tired either. Storm Shelter's blossoms will clear the plant each day. Don't worry though, there will be a plethora of others to take its place!
The show starts mid-summer and continues on and on. While your average Daylily will have a crop of flowers and be done, Storm Shelter goes above and beyond with a second blooming in the fall!
Your neighbors are sure to notice, but they won't be the only ones. Butterflies and other beneficial pollinators will stop by to snack on the nectar. They'll simply add to the colors of the rainbow your garden boasts!
From the top hybridizers at Proven Winners®, Storm Shelter is considered a Premium Daylily. This prestigious title is given to Daylilies that meet and exceed the highest standards! Not only is this herbaceous perennial salt-tolerant, but it also has excellent winter hardiness and a vigorous growth habit. Not to mention the mauve-colored blossoms.
Planting and Application:
This Proven Winner classic can be used in all sorts of ways in your garden. Add in the fact that it's such a durable perennial and the options only grow!
Use Storm Shelter as an accent in your already established perennial garden. Or, use the stunning multicolor blossoms as the focal point of a brand-new garden and build around it! Its mid-sized growing habit ensures it can easily be placed in the center of any garden without overtaking the back row plants.
A very common use for Daylilies, especially those designated as premium, is as a driveway liner. Storm Shelter has a high tolerance for salt, so those winter deicings won't bother it in the slightest! Many people employ Daylilies by their driveways and roads, because of how tolerant they are to salt spray in the winter, and how wonderfully Xeric they are! Plus Daylilies are on many fire-wise landscaping lists.
Do you have a pollinator garden in need of a little pop? Attract our little winged friends while also adding massive interest. Cottage gardens are another area this perennial excels. Its quirky eggplant purple petal edges make the perfect addition to gardens low on space with high flower power ambitions! There's no reason to limit this Daylily to gardens! Use a row as the border! It's often left alone by deer and wildlife and it could act as a deterrent for them to explore further.
These space-saving lovelies are even perfect thrillers in planters and containers around your porch or patio in the sun! Fill planting tubs, and container gardens too! Don't stress too much about where exactly to place this plant for the best effect. Storm Shelter will stand out wherever it's planted!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Helpful grower tips are almost not needed for this low-maintenance perennial. It asks for almost nothing in exchange for countless blooms throughout the seasons! Simply plant it in full sun so it can sunbathe all day long and it'll be happy as a clam! Of course, partial sun works just fine too! Well-drained soil is also a big plus. Mulching around your plants is always a good idea. A layer of mulch starting about an inch from the base of your plant will help keep the roots cool and conserve water in the hot, dry, summer months. Plus, it'll keep your garden looking clean and pristine!
One of the reasons Storm Shelter is considered a Premium Daylily is because of its ability to, more or less, Deadhead itself. No need to pick the spent flowers each day, it'll take care of that for you! But once those first round of flowering stems finish blooming, cut the flower stems down into the base of the leaves and your plants will send up new flower stalks sooner. Pruning your Daylily in the late autumn once frost has killed back the foliage, is a great way to prevent rust and diseases from overwintering and causing problems next year.
