Bright and lemony, the saturated through and through color of Stella de Oro (sometimes spelled Stella d'Oro) has become a bona fide garden favorite, with almost too many benefits and awards to mention! This perfect Daylily (a former "Perennial of the Year") has fragrant, ruffled buttercup-yellow flowers with apricot throats that measure about 2-½ inches across.
Attractive to honey and bumblebees, butterflies, and even a few curious hummingbirds, you'll want to plant a few extras to ensure you will have plenty to bring indoors for your floral bouquets without depriving your winged visitors of their nectar resource! These flowers are a beautiful contrast against forest-green, dense, sword-like foliage.
Stella de Oro is a compact, charming diploid perennial Daylily that re-blooms over a very long period of time! It has the adaptability to an impressively wide range of planting zones and conditions throughout USDA growing zones 2 to 9! Stella will keep painting your garden with vivid color from May through July.
Planting and Application:
Stella de Oro is wonderful for small places, such as containers on patios or the small garden! Fill urban courtyards with vibrant color, and create maximum impact with this bright yellow bloomer without sacrificing space! Ideal for use as fringe along paths and walkways, driveways, and as facer plants at the base of an evergreen hedge or your foundation planting!
Rock Gardens gain little beacons, and Cottage borders a bright pop of color! Planted together in large numbers, they quickly crowd out weeds and make a carefree and colorful ground cover. Create defensive zones in fire-prone areas! Daylily brightens xeric landscapes up and the fleshy roots store loads of water.
Daylilies can survive many harsh conditions that other plants cannot. This includes polluted city environments, slopes, poor and dry soils, near pavement that is salted in winter, and under Black Walnut trees (not affected by juglone).
- Fragrant Ruffled Buttercup Yellow Flowers
- Compact Fountains of Lush Green Foliage
- Blooms All Season!
- Great Cut Flower, Pollinator & Hummingbird Beacons
- Radiant in Containers, Garden Beds & Borders, Edging & En Masse
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Stella de Oro prefers full sun and about any kind of soil with good drainage. Daylilies normally get about a foot high and a foot or two wide and can take the heat and drought of hot climates and it can even thrive in clay and acid soils. These herbaceous perennials require little maintenance throughout the year to keep performing their best.
Deadhead to encourage a rebloom that lasts for weeks during the summer until the fall. Once the foliage dies back to the ground in the autumn, trim back the leaves and top with compost or refresh the mulch for the winter. Daylilies are susceptible to rust and some other foliage diseases so for that reason it is very important to cut all of the foliage and remove it before winter to prevent the overwintering of disease on the old leaves. Divide plants every few years to keep the clump size healthy and stress-free.
