Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: These daisies perform best in full sun, requiring at least six hours of direct light daily to produce those iconic shaggy blooms. While they tolerate partial shade, you will likely notice fewer flowers and stems that tend to flop over as they reach for the light.
  • Soil: Aim for fertile, well-drained soil that does not stay soggy, as "wet feet" over the winter is the fastest way to lose a Shasta Daisy. If you have heavy clay, mix in organic compost to improve drainage, or plant them in a raised bed to keep the crown above the water line.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Spun Silk daisies twice a week to help the roots knit into the surrounding soil. Once mature, these plants are quite drought-tolerant, though inconsistent moisture during a heatwave can lead to smaller flowers and scorched leaf edges. Aim for deep, infrequent watering at the base of the plant rather than light sprinkles that only dampen the foliage.

Pruning Tips

This variety blooms on new wood, so the best time to prune is in early spring just as new growth emerges from the base. Deadheading spent blooms throughout the summer is like giving the plant a second wind because it redirects energy away from seed production and back into creating more flowers. In late autumn, you can cut the stems back to the basal rosette of leaves to keep the garden tidy and prevent pests from overwintering in the old stalks.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as the first green shoots appear to fuel the summer show. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this encourages tender green growth that will not have time to harden off before the first frost. This soft growth acts like an invitation for winter damage and opportunistic garden pests.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Shasta Daisies are tough herbaceous perennials that have the most vigorous growth when grown in full sun. Well-drained soils are best and make sure you provide regular moisture as it's establishing itself in your landscape. After, this hardy plant is quite drought-tolerant, but wet roots will, especially during the winter, will cause an early demise.

A good way to ensure the longest flowering time is to periodically deadhead the spent flowers. This lets the plant focus its energy on making new blossoms for you to enjoy. It is best to prune down the stems and foliage in late autumn after it has turned yellow. Improve vigor by dividing every few years. Not only do you get a healthier plant, you get two healthy plants out of the deal!

  • Most Vigorous Growth in Full Sun
  • Moderate Regular Moisture
  • Appreciates Mulched Beds
  • Well-Drained Organically Enriched Soil - Dislikes Soggy Winter Soil
  • Reblooms if Deadheaded - Prune Mounds in Late Autumn
  • Seldom Damaged By Deer
