Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant in full sun for at least 6 to 8 hours daily to ensure the most vibrant magenta blooms. While it can handle light afternoon shade, the stems may stretch and the flower density will decrease if it receives too little light.
  • Soil: This shrub requires excellent drainage and thrives in loose, loamy soil. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a raised bed or a mound to prevent the roots from sitting in water, which can lead to root rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water deeply twice a week to help the root system reach deep into the soil. Once established, this Butterfly Bush is quite drought-tolerant, but providing a deep soak during dry spells keeps the blooms from wilting or shrinking. Avoid frequent, shallow sprinkles because they encourage weak roots that stay near the surface.

Pruning Tips

Since Funky Fuchsia™ blooms on new wood, you should prune it back hard in late winter or very early spring before new growth starts. Cut the entire plant down to about 12 inches from the ground to stimulate vigorous new stems and larger flower spikes. Think of this like a total reset that prevents the plant from becoming leggy and woody over time.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as the first green leaves appear to fuel the summer bloom cycle. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because they encourage tender green growth that can be easily damaged by the first frost. A single application in spring is usually all this vigorous grower needs for the entire season.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Like all Butterfly Bushes, Funky Fuchsia™ does best in full sun - otherwise, it will get leggy and sparse. It doesn't like wet feet, either so give it a place in your garden with good drainage. Plant with Nature Hills Root Booster and provide your Buddleia (sometimes spelled Buddleja) regular moisture access for their first year but become low-water usage once established. Provide supplemental moisture during drought and the summer months to keep the flowers returning. Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch to support your shrub's root system to hold moisture consistently and insulate the roots.

Take care to deadhead this beauty and you will have flowers well into autumn. Once winter hits, Funky Fuchsia™ will die back to the ground like a perennial in cold winter places. In warmer climates, prune it back in spring to 12-inches to rejuvenate the entire plant.
