Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This shrub requires at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight every day. Full sun is essential for the "Miss Violet" to produce its signature dark purple flower spikes and to keep the stems sturdy rather than leggy.
  • Soil: Plant in well-drained soil that does not hold standing water. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a raised mound or add organic compost to the planting hole to improve drainage, as "wet feet" is the quickest way to kill a Butterfly Bush.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water deeply twice a week to ensure the root system establishes itself in the surrounding soil. Once mature, this variety is quite drought-tolerant, but providing supplemental water during extreme dry spells prevents the foliage from wilting and keeps the bloom production high. Inconsistent watering often leads to smaller flower panicles and a shorter blooming window.

Pruning Tips

Miss Violet blooms on new wood, meaning the flowers grow on the fresh stems produced in the current year. Prune the entire plant back to about 12 inches above the ground in early spring just as new growth begins to emerge. This "hard haircut" removes winter-damaged wood and encourages a flush of vigorous new stems that will hold the summer flowers.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as the first green leaves appear to fuel the season's growth. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages soft, green growth that won't harden off properly before the first frost, making the plant vulnerable to winter kill.

Long-blooming, fast-growing, drought tolerant, non-invasive, deer resistant...the list goes on and on! The Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Miss Violet Butterfly Bush (Buddleia x 'Miss Violet') seems to have it all as a hardy perennial shrub, but then consider the addition of brilliant, fragrant blooms and you have a plant that is nothing short of amazing!

Miss Violet is a Butterfly Bush variety with long, clustered, densely-packed spikes of violet blossoms! These vivid fragrant blooms reach out and arch over the dark green foliage in late summer and continue their show into fall! The aromatic foliage and airy branching are tightly branched!

The irresistible fragrance and color act like a beacon to pollinators, including the butterflies that will hasten to your yard in droves to partake of Miss Violet's delicious nectar. The Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Miss Violet Butterfly Bush is a deciduous, ornamental shrub with an upright habit and semi-compact nature throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9.

Planting and Application:

Miss Violet would be perfect for a wildlife garden but is certainly a welcome addition to any spot where you can sit back and witness the floral show and pollinator-heaven it creates. Use it as a back-row plant in your perennial garden or dressing up a foundation border. Not only will Miss Violet add flair in the later summer months, but even when it isn't in bloom the green will make a stunning backdrop for other perennials!

Butterfly Bushes have always been beloved by gardeners! Must-haves for the pollinator garden and cut flower border, these fragrant blossoms stand out indoors and out! Add it to your smaller cottage gardens too! Their easy-care nature and tidy form make these ideal for commercial sites and en masse plantings!

  • Fat Spires of Violet Flower Clusters
  • Dense Round Form
  • Pollinator Nectar & Pollen Resources
  • Long-Lasting Blooms
  • Gorgeous Backdrops, Specimens, Butterfly Gardens & Focal Points

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Butterfly Bushes are relatively easy to grow! When picking out a planting site, look for somewhere in full sun with well-drained soil. This will ensure your shrub is happy from the start. You'll want to water well during the first year to help it get established, but after that, these shrubs can be low-moisture needs.

Appreciating a 3-4 inch layer of mulching around the bottom will help regulate temperatures and conserve water. Buddleia is a woody shrub in warmer areas but is typically treated much more like Perennials in colder climates. You'll want to cut back all stems in late winter before the growing season starts. This helps the plant develop new fresh growth from down low. Plus, if you deadhead the shrub throughout its blooming season, it'll encourage the plant to produce new flowers and continue blooming. You can also try renewal pruning by removing a third of the oldest growth every 3-5 years. Mow or trim back suckers if they are not desired each year.

  • Full Sun Flowering Shrubs
  • Well-Drained Soil Needs
  • Moderate to Low Moisture
  • Can Be Perennial & Deciduous Shrubs Depending on your Climate
  • Deadhead to Keep The Non-Invasive Flowers Returning
  • Deer & Rabbit Resistant
