Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Thrives in partial shade, ideally receiving 2 to 4 hours of gentle morning sun followed by afternoon shade. While this variety tolerates heat better than other Astilbes, too much direct afternoon sun can scorch the foliage and fade the white blooms.
  • Soil: Plant in rich, loamy soil that stays consistently moist but drains well enough to prevent rotting. If you are gardening in clay or sandy soil, mix in plenty of compost or peat moss to improve texture and moisture retention.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during the first season while the root system establishes itself. Although Astilbe chinensis varieties handle short dry spells better than others, allowing them to dry out completely often results in crispy, brown leaf margins. A layer of organic mulch around the base works wonders to lock in the necessary moisture and keep the roots cool.

Pruning Tips

Wait until early spring to prune this perennial, as the dried seed heads add texture to the winter landscape and protect the crown. Simply cut the old, brown foliage down to the ground before new green growth begins to emerge. This annual cleanup ensures the new stems have plenty of space and airflow to develop dense, healthy plumes.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer in early spring just as new shoots break through the soil surface. Avoid using high-nitrogen lawn fertilizers near your Astilbe, as this promotes lush foliage at the expense of flower production.

Description

The airy Vision in White Astilbe (Astilbe chinensis 'Vision in White') produces a multitude of large, fragrant, soft, white, plume-like flowers that float above bronze-green foliage for weeks! Rising above the mounds of lacy foliage, the white flowering spires bring in the bees and butterflies, and even a hummingbird or two!

The Vision in White is a robust and compact plant with linen-white plumes that offer a striking contrast against the mound of glossy, dark bronze-green, finely-cut, textured foliage. At maturity, you can expect this Astilbe to reach a height of 20 to 30 inches!

The Vision series is known for its compact nature and full-sized blooms that show off from late summer and into fall, without taking up vital garden space! Hardy and disease-resistant throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 8, these are widely adaptable perennials that deer and rabbits seldom bother with unless desperate!

Landscape Application:

These mid-summer blooming beauties are ideal for containers, in shaded and partly sunny gardens, or along the edge of woodlands! For maximum color and impact, mass Astilbe in groups beneath the understory of large trees for a gorgeous display.

Lacy edging and front of the garden border accents, Astilbe are airy summer flowers and the foliage adds the finishing touch your garden beds and borders need to ease the transition between garden and lawn or hardscape! The perfect fringe along the edges of a pathway and your shaded driveway.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Astilbe is widely adaptable to partial sun and dappled shade locations, growing best in different soil types as long as it is well-drained. Requiring consistently moist highly organic soil. Humus forest gardens are a perfect example of where these plants will thrive, but these will be more tolerant to drier soils than other varieties of Astilbe.

The use of mulch near the base of the plants to maintain moisture is recommended. Deadhead after the flowers fade and prune back the mounds of these herbaceous perennials in the spring and divide every few years to maintain the clump's tidiness.

  • Partly Shaded Locations & Full Shade In Hot Zones
  • Enriched Well-Drained Soil Locations
  • Regular Moisture Access
  • Deadhead After Flowers Fade & Prune Back Early Spring
  • Deer, Rabbit & Disease-Resistant Perennials

The brilliant white, fragrant flowers above the bronzy green foliage reflect dappled sunlight in gardens, for a dazzling effect. Drifts of this Vision in White Astilbe are stunning and add an elegantly refined display in the landscape with the help of NatureHills.com!
