Old-fashioned fragrant climber, the Zephirine Drouhin Rose (Rosa 'Zephirine Drouhin') is a vigorous Climbing Rose that puts on an incredible show when in full bloom! This antique classic is in high demand, but generally hard to find. This Climber has scented, vibrant, large flowers with sometimes as many as 25-30 petals each! The butterflies and bees will adore these!
Zephirine Drouhin is remarkable for several reasons! It's a vigorous climber so you won't have to fuss with it to see results. It's also nearly thornless, so when you do decide to work with it, you don't have to worry about risking injury to do so. Plus, this Rose can adapt to part-shade situations, opening the door to a world of many uses throughout your landscape. Zephirine is grown on its own root so there's no worry of unwanted suckers!
As if the Bourbon Rose Zephirine Drouhin's remarkable qualities aren't enough, it's also incredibly beautiful and prolific in bloom. The abundance of 4-inch, deep-pink, semi-double flowers are incredibly fragrant. They'll appear in May and continue on all growing season, right up until frost. You'll enjoy their sweet fragrance all summer and into fall!
The new growth is reddish, and the leaves have a delightful bronze color that matures to a glossy, dark green hue that is thick and vibrant in appearance. Even after the foliage drops in autumn, the purplish coloring of the canes adds an attractive accent to the winter landscape throughout USDA hardiness zones 5 through 9.
Planting and Application:
One Zephirine is sure to look amazing climbing your garden wall or trained against a trellis. It is a great vertical focal point to be planted on a pillar or larger garden obelisk in a nice sunny area. Many like to train the longer canes along a fence. Some even like to plant them as a colorful freeform and informal hedge. Train one as an upright accent over the top of your front entrance or patio. Grow them up and over a pergola or at an entrance to a garden room.
Plant as a backdrop to your Rose garden and add Rose bushes and Rose trees for varying heights. Climbing Roses like Zephirine Drouhin will add vertical color, fragrance and privacy to your garden by elevating its spectacular, floral display to eye level. There will be loads of blooms for your vase displays indoors too! It's an absolute must-have if you're seeking an antique, Climbing Rose with a gorgeous pink color that's also incredibly hardy and easy-care.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This opens the plant up for full exposure to the sun so it can produce maximum amounts of bloom. Plant your Rose in an enriched site with plenty of humus and organic matter. Give your Rose moderate, consistent moisture. Provide a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch around the root system to hold in moisture and insulate the roots. Clean up any dropped leaves in early spring and keep an open interior for air circulation. This is a big part of preventing blackspot and other issues, but this Rose is naturally disease-resistant.
How to Prune and Train Climbing Roses
Pruning should not be done during the first two to three years, since Climbing Roses need time to build flowering Rose canes. These structural canes will grow thicker for several years before it is time to replace them.
Spring Pruning and Structural Rejuvenation
Remember that spring pruning is most limited to removing broken branches, and dead tips or correcting the structure of the Climbing Roses. If you remove long canes and side branching you will be removing the first set of June flowers.
- Prune Roses in early spring just as you see new buds beginning to swell.
- Remove any dead, diseased, or damaged branches.
- Identify several new, younger, more vigorous canes to become the new structural foundation of your beautiful Climbing Rose.
- Remove the fattest, oldest canes out at the soil level, if possible and right after the first set of flowers finishes. Those canes will be replaced with new shoots that develop from the base. As these new, rapidly produced shoots elongate, you will want to direct, train, and tie them into the place you would like them to develop.
Summer Maintenance and Pruning
Horizontal branches produce the most flowers. Prune these secondary canes after flowering, because Climbing Roses bloom on last year's canes (old wood).
- Cut your secondary canes down to 6 - 8 inches above a bud after the first flush of flowers has finished.
- Trim the secondary canes back at 90 to 45-degree angles.
- Keep your structural support canes in place.
In colder regions it may be more difficult to maintain Climbing Roses, so choosing your planting site is important.
Winter protection is best for Roses grown in zones 7 and colder. Mulch is your best, more natural way to overwinter roses by mounding the dormant canes in late fall. Don't fall prune, rather instead wait until spring.
Those new long cases of this nearly thornless Rose will produce flowers next year, so be careful not to trim them back. Read all you need about Climbing Rose training and care, pruning Rose, and about winterizing your Roses, and un-wintering Roses in spring in our #ProPlantTips Garden Blog!
Roses respond really well to adding fertilizer to keep them producing flowers. It is important not to feed too late in the summer so the plants can shut down before winter and go dormant naturally and overwinter better.
