Gorgeous, easy-care native shrubs for your landscape! The Sargent Cranberrybush Viburnum (Viburnum sargentii) is very similar to American Cranberrybush but in a smaller and more compact form! Featuring edible berries, lovely lacy white blooms, and lobed green foliage as the rest of the family, Sargent also has a fantastic red fruit display in bright, translucent red drupes lasting well into January!
What more do you need? Well, in the spring you will be inundated with pollinators, bees and butterflies and in the fall, the foliage will turn an excellent red-purple color, then in late autumn and winter, the swarms of hungry songbirds arrive! Be sure to plant a couple of extra Cranberrybush Viburnum to boost pollination for more fruit for you and your backyard bird populations! The ones that don't migrate will be grateful for the persistent smorgasbord you are offering through the winter! Plus the fantastic cover and nesting habitat these large shrubs provide!
Very cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 3 through 7, these are wildly adaptable deciduous shrubs that offer up four seasons of color, beauty, and interest! Sargent is very vigorous and resistant to aphids but the larval caterpillars this native shrub hosts feed loads of hungry songbird chicks, plus you'll help support local butterfly populations in the process!
Planting and Application:
You can use this as a specimen plant for adorning a berm in your front yard, sectioning off a slice of yard for a secluded patio planting or creating outdoor rooms around your yard! Fantastic as a hedge or in groupings for privacy and hiding an ugly eyesore - we're sure the neighbors won't mind and the songbirds will utilize the habitat and food source! Don't forget these romantic blossoms in the cutting garden for fine-textured bouquet additions!
Or employ Sargent as a cottage border and perennial garden backdrop. Anchor your foundation or create an enticing entrance to your backyard by framing the back garden gate in lacecap blooms! Create an allée behind seating or a garden bench and watch the butterflies flutter around you! When used as a specimen or patio tree, leave plenty of room for root expansion. It can be pruned to any size and shape so that any property size can enjoy these fantastic shrubs!
Why not go a little crazy and create a dynamic mixed-border by planting the small 5-6 feet tall Compact American Cranberrybush with some 10-12 feet tall tree-form pruned American Cranberry and accent with the midsized 8-10 feet tall Sargent Viburnum? Then accent them with the tiny Spring Green Cranberrybush too! Your garden will become the head-turning bird and pollinator native hotspot on the block!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Cranberrybush Viburnum will fruit best in full sun but will also grow and flower beautifully in partial shade. Preferring moist, well-drained soil, these are widely adaptable to most soil types and moisture levels once established!
Careful pruning allows this shrub to maintain its natural shape while encouraging the development of new wood, so only prune right after flowering (though you will remove the ornamental berries in the process). Renewal pruning controls size without removing the fall berries, by cutting out a few largest, oldest limbs every 3-5 years.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Adaptable to Most Well-Drained Soil Types
- Provide Mulched Beds & Moderate, Regular Moisture
- Prune After Flowering To Deadhead & Shape Shrub
- Deer Don't Prefer The Taste & Juglone Resistant
There is always space for a Viburnum in any landscape, and this one will look terrific in yours as well! With so many to choose from, the versatility of the Sargent Cranberrybush Viburnum blows the others out of the playing field! Hurry and order yours today from NatureHills.com!
