Sedge Grasses - Your Moist Landscapes Best Friend!

Sedge Grass (Carex) is sometimes mistaken as an Ornamental Grass but is a hardy perennial that is grass-like but not a true Grass.

Sedge GrassSedges are handsome, low-growing, clumping plants that will add a splash of yellow or green to your garden! Featuring colorful arching foliage that can be evergreen in warm climates and semi-evergreen in colder areas.

Many forms of Sedge are green to golden-green, while others feature bold white variegation or gold and green for a unique splash of color!

The flowers resemble spikey seedheads and aren't the real reason many people buy Sedge, the clumping glossy foliage is the real star of the show! This plant will provide seed and cover for birds and other wildlife.

Sedges Look Great In The Garden!

When planted in mass, Sedge can be beneficial for erosion control. Plant around ponds, streams or any moist area. Their love of moist conditions makes Sedge ideal in the Rain Garden and around water features! Plant near where the HVAC unit drains or by the gutters where other plants may struggle.

These perennial plants create lovely flowing edging along garden beds and borders or en masse throughout larger areas of moist to average landscapes! Ornamental Sedges make easy-care foliage plants. Partial shade and full shade (in hot climates) gardens are perfect for Sedges, giving you a wider range of places to use these lovely perennials!

Use them to boost interest with graceful, arching, variegated blades sweeping the path, lining walkways, and as edging and facer plants! Even in containers and planters, these spillers and fillers add their fine texture to your porch and patio planting!

Sedge is becoming quite popular in landscapes as a lawn replacement or groundcover option.

Caring For Sedge Grass

Sedge is very adaptable and will grow well even in wet or shady conditions. This perennial prefers planted in shade along with moist soils, making it a great companion plant for use with other shade plants.

Prune back the plants or clean their mounds in the early spring if needed. All plants prefer a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch around their roots, especially in drier conditions.
