When Should Crocus Bulbs Be Planted?

Technically known as corms, Crocus bulbs should be planted in early fall before the ground freezes. This can be anywhere from September to November, depending on your growing zone and climate.

Can You Leave Crocus Bulbs in the Ground All Winter?

Growing zones 3 to 8 can leave Crocus plants in the ground, or even in a large planter. This is possible because Crocus bulbs require at least six to eight weeks of what’s known as “chill hours” before they will sprout.

But there are some exceptions to the in-ground chill:

  • If you are in a hardiness zone where it can get too cold, dig up your Crocus and store them in soil or a mesh bag in a cold garage, cellar or shed.
  • If you’re in a zone where there are not enough chill hours in winter, dig up bulbs and store them in a well-ventilated bag in a refrigerator.
  • If you have poorly draining soil, the bulbs may rot during winter. If so, dig up Crocus as soon as they die back for the year and store them safely.

Where and How Should I Plant Crocus Bulbs?

These quick tips provide an overview on the best way to plant crocus bulbs.

  • Crocus bulbs prefer full sun to partial shade. They also like well-drained soil with moderate soil fertility and moderate moisture.
  • For earlier blooms, plant them in a sheltered, sunny spot. For a later bloom, plant under light shade, or on the north side of a house or wall.
  • Plant Crocus in a pot, planter, window box or other outdoor containers.
  • Try forcing bulbs indoors in early winter. Provide enough drainage, average moisture, and enough chill time.

Plant Crocus flower bulbs two to six inches apart. Dig them 3 inches deep and plant the pointed end up. Water them well.

FAQS for Buying Crocus Bulbs Online

When is the best time to plant Crocus bulbs for spring blooms?

Crocus bulbs (technically corms) should be planted in early fall before the ground freezes. Depending on your growing zone, this can be anywhere from September through November. Fall planting allows your Crocus to establish roots and soak up the chill hours they need for that unforgettable early spring bloom.

Can I leave Crocus bulbs in the ground over winter?

Yes, in USDA Growing Zones 3 through 8, Crocus bulbs can overwinter in the ground with no problem. They actually need 6–8 weeks of cold temperatures to trigger blooming. Just be sure your soil drains well—soggy winter soil can lead to bulb rot. In warmer zones or extreme cold areas, consider digging and storing them properly until it’s planting time again.

Do Crocus bulbs multiply each year?

They sure do! Crocus bulbs naturalize beautifully, meaning they multiply and come back stronger each year with more cheerful blooms. With the right soil, sun, and drainage, you’ll enjoy growing clumps of these early bloomers that spread their joy season after season!

Where should I plant Crocus bulbs for the best bloom?

Crocus thrive in full sun to part shade and appreciate well-drained soil. For early blooms, plant in sunny, sheltered spots. For later pops of color, try planting under trees, beside walkways, or on the north side of your home. They're also fantastic in rock gardens, window boxes, containers, or naturalized into grassy areas for a lawn full of spring sparkle.

Can I grow Crocus bulbs indoors or in containers?

Absolutely! Crocus bulbs are perfect for pots, window boxes, or even indoor forcing. Just give them a chill period, well-draining soil, and a sunny spot. These small but mighty bulbs can brighten patios, balconies, or indoor spaces when the winter blues have overstayed their welcome.
