Fragrant spring blooms, berries, and four-season color, the Fragrant Viburnum (Viburnum X juddii) is a hardy, medium-sized deciduous flowering shrub with a rounded form. Beautiful clusters of extremely fragrant pinkish-white blossoms appear in late spring and tickle your nose with their sweet spicy scent while calling pollinators and hummingbirds from near and far.
Fragrant Viburnum is one of the most elegant flowering shrubs that will give you pleasure for many years to come! Backed by a wider-than-tall rounded shrub full of textured dark green foliage, these grow 6-8 feet in height and spread to a nice 6- 10 feet wide. You can easily control the size with annual pruning after Fragrant is finished blooming.
However, you may not want to because once the fall sets in, the songbirds take over where the pollinators left off and arrive in droves to shelter in the dense branching and pluck off the black fruit in the autumn for added interest! If the birds don't make off with the fruit, you'll enjoy them through winter with a gorgeous flush of purple fall foliage color. You will want to plant an equally fragrant Korean Spice or Spice Baby Viburnum nearby for cross-pollination.
Planting and Application:
Fragrant is a deciduous plant that performs well as a shrub border and mixed-shrub patchwork shelterbelt. Group this Viburnum with large flowering shrubs, such as Lilacs and Rhododendron, for an outstanding addition to your landscape. Slow the wind, block prying eyes, stop drifting snow, and create banks of privacy for your yard with these flowering lovelies! For fragrant entertaining, create outdoor garden rooms for barbecues, yoga, reading or just enjoying your morning coffee!
These flowering shrubs are gorgeous when used for foundation plantings and property definition, and become dramatic backdrops to highlight perennial and cottage borders! But just one specimen anchors a garden bed, or hides an HVAC unit. However you use yours, Fragrant adds perfume anywhere in the sun or partial shade landscape!
- Pink & White Clusters of Flowers
- Highly Fragrant Blooms
- Lush Dense Textured Green Foliage

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This Viburnum is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Fragrant Viburnum prefers moist loams but tolerates a wide range of soils so long as they are well-drained. Because these shrubs bloom on old wood, wait to prune until that flush of scented flowers are done, then prune. But to enjoy fruit as well, instead only renewal prune by removing the oldest, fattest stems a few at a time. This revitalizes the shrub by keeping berries and younger, more vigorous growth. Add a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch over your root system
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Adaptable to Most Well-Drained Soil Types
- Provide Mulched Beds & Moderate, Regular Moisture
- Prune After Flowering To Deadhead & Shape
- Deer Don't Prefer the Taste & Juglone Resistant
- Easy-Care & Low Maintenance
Many seasons of interest on a fantastic fragrant ornamental, hurry and order your own very Fragrant Viburnum today from Nature Hills!
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Viburnum Bushes Fragrant?
The flowers on the Fragrant Viburnum have a strong spicy-sweet fragrance!
When Do You Prune Flowering Viburnum Shrubs?
Viburnum shrubs bloom on old wood, so it is very important to only prune them immediately after the flowers fade. Should you wish to enjoy the fruit that forms after the flowers fade, then do not prune, instead remove one-third of the oldest, fattest stems that are no longer as vigorous. Pruning them out at the ground level. This leaves fruit for birds and winter interest and increases overall plant vigor while reducing the size of your shrub.
Do Viburnums Like Full Sun or Shade? What is the Best Location for Viburnum?
Viburnums in general need full sun for the most fruit and flowers, but also do well in partial shade and afternoon shade. Highly adaptable, they enjoy mulched, enriched, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. They need regular moisture while young, but once established will only need supplemental moisture during extreme heat and drought.
Does Fragrant Viburnum Produce Fruit?
The Fragrant Viburnum will produce fruit that matures black in the fall but they need another similar Viburnum such as Korean Spice and Spice Baby Viburnum planted nearby for cross-pollination.
Does Viburnum Spread? How big does Fragrant Viburnum Viburnum get?
Fragrant Viburnum can form suckers at the base of the plant, but these can be removed when pruning after flowering or mowed down if you do not wish it to spread. Not invasive, these plants will politely form tidy thickets over time when allowed. Fragrant Viburnum can grow to a 6-8 foot tall and 6-10 feet wide shrub in optimal conditions.
Do Viburnum Shrubs Lose Their Leaves in Winter?
Fragrant Viburnum is a deciduous Viburnum and will drop its leaves in the fall and shows off purple color.
