Where to Plant

• Sunlight: This woodland native thrives in full to partial shade, ideally receiving less than 4 hours of direct light or dappled sun throughout the day. While it tolerates gentle morning rays, you must protect it from harsh afternoon sun to prevent the creamy white leaf margins from scorching and turning brown.
• Soil: Aim for soil that mimics a forest floor: cool, loose, and rich in organic matter. If you are working with heavy clay or loose sand, mix in plenty of compost or leaf mold to improve drainage and moisture retention simultaneously.

Watering Requirements

Consistent moisture is key during the first season to help the thick rhizomes establish a strong network. Once established, these plants are surprisingly drought tolerant, though they will look their best and hold their foliage longer with regular weekly watering. If the soil dries out completely for too long, you will notice the leaf tips browning and the plant going dormant earlier than usual.

Pruning Tips

Since this is an herbaceous perennial, simply cut the entire stalk down to the ground in late autumn after the foliage yellows or in very early spring before shoots emerge. This cleanup prevents fungal issues and clears the stage for the arching stems to rise cleanly next season. Think of it as clearing the deck so the new growth does not have to fight through last year's debris.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer or a layer of compost in early spring just as the new shoots, which resemble asparagus, start to poke through the soil.
