Our plant experts take great pride in carefully developing the First Editions® Vanilla Strawberry™ Tree Form Panicle Hydrangea PP#20,670 (Hydrangea paniculata 'Renhy'). They'll deliver a huge floral display that lasts for months!

Artistically pruned for three years, Vanilla Strawberry™ Hydrangea truly becomes a living work of art.

You'll enjoy big white blooms that start turning pink in the center and spread across the bloom into finally developing a memorable shade of strawberry red. Cooler weather starts the color show!

This plant is an award-winning Hydrangea variety that has been trained into a unique tree-like shape (tree form). Plant them in the ground, or use them in patio pots for an enchanting presentation near your pool or backyard grill.

These lush, tiny trees look terrific decorating courtyards, entrances, and high-profile areas. Use one or two as an ornamental tree by your home's entrance for instant curb appeal.

A Vanilla Strawberry™ Hydrangea is the type of plant that causes passers-by to catch their breath, and when in tree form. . . well, it's simply astounding!

These vibrant plants burst into a July bloom of 7-inch tall panicles, each composed of tightly packed, delicate, true flowers in the center of creamy-white four-petalled bracts.

The tree Hydrangea has a sweetly cascading habit as the numerous flowers grow large, held on their red-tinted stems. Give it plenty of room to impress you and your guests with its lyrically downturned branches.

As the season progresses, your late summer flowers will take on a multicolored effect as the new flowers bloom alongside the old. You simply can't understand the full stunning nature of this remarkable Panicle Hydrangea tree until you've seen it for yourself!

In some years, you'll keep seeing new white blooms on your tree at the same time as the more highly colored blooms. Each year is a bit different—depending on the weather—and you'll never grow tired of these living sculptures.

The red coloration lasts for several weeks in late summer and early fall. You'll love this tree all year long, but it truly shines in fall.

Now...it may take a year or two for your tree to mature into this outstanding pigmentation. It's worth the wait!

Cut armloads of these big, beautiful blooms to bring indoors for cunning cut flower arrangements. It's easy to create a professional-looking bouquet with these sturdy red stems.

Contrast with a few boughs of the green foliage as a filler. Remove the water from your vase and let the blooms air dry for a lovely indoor display.

Some people use them as holiday decorations. They'll spray paint the dried blooms and add them to door wreaths and tablescapes.

Be sure to leave the last blooms to dry on the tree to a beautiful buff color. You'll get an added boost of winter interest.

This special tree-form Vanilla Strawberry™ Hydrangea took our nursery team three years to craft into perfection. They are finally ready to ship to you!

Because of the time and work involved in producing these trees, quantities are very limited. Order now to avoid disappointment!

How to Use Vanilla Strawberry™ Panicle Hydrangea Tree Form in the Landscape

If you are looking for a way to add color to your small space landscape, you've found the right choice. Use Vanilla Strawberry™ Panicle Hydrangea tree front-and-center in your garden design.

You won't want to miss a moment of their spectacular, long-blooming display.

Add a few of these cascading beauties behind your patio furniture. You'll have an airy sense of privacy and can get a chance to see the pink come on as the nights get a bit chillier.

Do you know when you have to pull out your hoodie or snuggle up in a long cardigan to sit with your friends around your fire pit? That's just about the time you'll start seeing the enormous flower heads turn pink, then finally strawberry red.

Plan a football watch party! Your guests won't be able to believe their eyes. Pair it with Asters, Ornamental Grasses, and Autumn Joy Sedum to create a fantastic fall focal point.

Plant one in a 20-inch diameter outdoor pot to decorate a balcony. Position it to give yourself some blissfully welcome privacy.

Balcony plants may need wind protection. We've seen some creative use of bungee cords, or jute rope tied to the rail and wrapped around the container.

Add a series of these superstars along your pool deck or patio. They effortlessly bring a graceful sense of sophisticated style you've been craving.

Place one or more near the entrance to your home. Use one as a modern, offset specimen. Flank either side of your door with a pair. Or, create a lawn planting with a cute informal group of three.

Two of these trees will also look great punctuating either end of a long hedge of the matching Vanilla Strawberry™ shrub. "Open and close" your flowering hedge with chutzpah!

We love the idea of alternating a tree form with a shrub form. Create a curved, mulched island planting bed on the lawn. Use four Vanilla Strawberry™ shrubs and three of these trees, alternating between the two types of forms.

You'll create a magical garden feature that will make you proud every time you look at it. Lavish your love on this, and make your neighbors jealous.

Be sure to site it where you'll see it from your picture window or kitchen window. Give yourself something great to look at as you do the dishes, or curl up on the couch.

They'll bring such a wonderful whimsy to the yard, so why not use one to shade your child's play structure? What a nice memory to gift the special children in your life. This tiny tree is just their size!

#ProPlantTips for Care

These trees need at least four hours of direct sunlight a day. They will do just fine with morning sun and afternoon shade. You'll get better flowering displays in full sun if you live in a cooler growing zone, but please provide afternoon shade for Hydrangeas in hotter climates.

Add a packet of Nature Hills Root Booster for your tree. You'll add the contents to the top inch or two of backfill soil. Give your tree the beneficial ingredients they need to develop a lifelong symbiotic relationship. Root Booster gives plants a head-start on acquiring critical water and micronutrients through its tiny feeder roots.

Plant them in well-drained soil that sheds water quickly after rain. If you have puddles that remain for a long time, build a raised planting bed. Or, plant them in an extra-large container.

Don't use saucers underneath potted trees outside. Look for the pottery feet to lift the container up and off the pavement or ground.

Water your new trees carefully. Provide a medium amount of water on an even schedule. Container trees can be set up with automated drip irrigation to keep hydrating them super simple.

Mulch is a wonderful way to slowly improve your soil. Apply a three-inch layer, but pull it back a bit from the main trunk.

It's important to shape your Hydrangea tree form each year. It's easy! Each year during the late winter or early spring, grab your favorite pruning shears and reduce the overall size to a two to three-foot sphere, cutting only the brown dormant stems.

If you have an older, larger, tree, you can always reduce the size to a three to four-foot sphere to preserve some height. Just make sure the pruning is done by the time new growth starts. Flowers develop on that new growth that follows!

Add an organic, slow-release fertilizer for flowering plants in early spring, and again in mid-summer. Use the application rate provided on the label.

Take care when adding flowering shrubs to lawn plantings. Nitrogen-rich lawn fertilizers will cause a reduction in flowering. Use a light hand with lawn fertilizers near your tree.

You can also top-dress your plant with an annual application of compost. You'll want to baby these amazing trees. Not because they are so delicate per se; but simply because you love them!

Vanilla Strawberry™ is a paniculata Hydrangea that blooms on new wood.

Nice tree but not without issues

I purchased this tree in 2018, and have had problems with the leaves turning yellow and dropping off. The tree seems healthy otherwise, but wondering if anyone has had similar problems. The blooms are very heavy, causing the branches to droop. They did turn pink, but very light in color. Not the darker pink I expected. Do I need to provide some type of fertilizer, etc?

Hello Sue,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your detailed experience with your tree since 2018. We truly appreciate your feedback and understand how those yellowing leaves and branch drooping can be concerning.

Yellow leaves and leaf drop can often be related to watering habits, nutrient levels, or environmental changes. It’s great to hear your tree otherwise seems healthy—sometimes light yellowing might indicate a need for balanced fertilization. A slow-release, balanced fertilizer with equal parts nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium applied in early spring can help strengthen overall growth and bloom color. Also, verifying your soil’s moisture levels—making sure it drains well but isn’t too dry —will support both foliage health and strong flower development.

As for the blooms being lighter than expected, different growing conditions and sunlight exposure can influence bloom hues, with deeper pinks often enhanced by consistent sun and optimal nutrition.

You might also find our growing guides at NatureHills.com helpful—they cover fertilizing tips, watering schedules, and pruning advice tailored specifically for trees like yours.

Hi Sue,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your tree since 2018. We truly appreciate hearing how your tree is doing, and we understand how concerning those yellowing leaves and unexpected branch drooping must be.

Yellow leaves can often indicate nutrient deficiencies, water inconsistencies, or soil issues. Since your tree otherwise seems healthy, providing a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for flowering trees could help address nutrient needs—particularly one higher in phosphorus to encourage stronger bloom coloration and support good root development. Also, mulching around the base can help retain moisture and improve soil health. If branches are drooping because of heavy blooms, gentle pruning or tying branches carefully may give them better support. Regarding bloom color intensity, factors like sunlight exposure and soil acidity can affect pigmentation, so ensuring your tree gets ample sunlight and slightly acidic to neutral soil may help deepen the pink tones next season.

We’d be happy to help you choose an appropriate fertilizer or provide a detailed care plan if you’re interested! Feel free to reach out anytime for personalized advice.

Wishing you happy planting,
