Description
Sweet Reward® Coral Azalea (Rhododendron x 'NCB195') is a deciduous azalea that covers itself in large, fragrant flowers in shades of coral, salmon and sherbet orange each spring. It grows into a rounded shrub 3 to 6 feet tall and wide, and it is hardy in zones 5 through 8.
Many azaleas give you color but no scent. The Sweet Reward® series comes from native azalea parentage, so the wide-open blooms carry a sweet fragrance you notice from across the garden, and the plants handle colder winters than many other azaleas. The warm coral tone pairs well with blue-flowered perennials, ferns and the deep green of evergreen shrubs.
Plant it along the front of the house, on a bank, in a woodland border or as a specimen near a patio where you can enjoy the fragrance. Groups of three or more make a strong spring show. Space plants 3 to 5 feet apart. Bees and other pollinators visit the open flowers.
Give it full sun to part shade, with some afternoon shade in hot summer areas. Like all azaleas it needs acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, and it rots in soggy ground, so plant the root ball slightly high in heavy soil. A layer of mulch keeps the shallow roots cool and moist. It blooms on old wood, so prune only right after the flowers fade. Azaleas are toxic to cats, dogs and horses if eaten.
Add Sweet Reward® Coral Azalea to your cart for fragrant coral color that kicks off the spring garden.
