Gorgeous Serviceberry shrubs are ornamental shrubs with exceptional features! Your Cole's Select Serviceberry (Amelanchier x grandiflora 'Cole's Select') features clusters of 5-petalled white flowers, even before the foliage appears each spring! The brilliant drifts of white will be abuzz with beneficial insects and pollinators seeking an early source of nectar and pollen!
Leaves begin to sprout in early spring, each leaf featuring a slight reddish/grey tint, and slowly developing as time passes to a dark green! As autumn approaches, the fall color assumes a brilliant orange to decorate your landscape until the leaves fall to reveal smooth grey bark for the winter.
The green foliage fills the shrub out nicely as blueberry-like fruit develops in summer, referred to as Juneberries! A tasty treat for both you and your feathers friends. You can eat these berries raw in moderation, juice them, or bake them in pies. Turn the juice into delicious jams or syrups as you would Elderberry, Mulberry, and Beautyberry! Because you can have a larger harvest every other year, you can freeze the berries for later use whenever you have a bumper crop!
Serviceberry are cold-hardy native hybrids that handle winter temperatures throughout USDA planting zones 3 through 7. Growing into an open 20 - 25 feet in height and 12 - 15 feet in width, but can be pruned smaller as needed to accommodate your landscape!
Planting and Application:
Cole's Select Serviceberry has a multi-stemmed nature and a lovely vase shape. Cole's Serviceberry can adapt to a variety of conditions and is even shade and is urban-tolerant. Overall, Cole's is very hardy, and under optimal conditions will even live up to 40 years! So get ready for many juicy harvests and spring displays!
Plant a single shrub as an accent in the front yard, or a grouping in the backyard for a naturalized effect. They can define the edge of rustic woodlands, as well. Plant them 20 to 30 feet apart in drifts. Vary the spacing and use a loose triangular pattern for the most natural look!
Prune as a single-stem focal point or multi-stemmed cluster, these shrubby trees can be long-lived and are incredibly easy to grow! Serviceberry work well as graceful lawn specimens that won't shade out your turf, or as street trees, and can be placed under power lines, nor are their roots invasive if you plant one as an anchor to your foundation plantings!
Jump on the edible gardening bandwagon and plant a double-duty shrub that has fragrant flowers, lush foliage, wildlife-friendly and human-edible fruit, then gorgeous fall foliage! Have it all and stock your pantry with early summer treats at the same time!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Amelanchier in a full sun location for the most fruit but can handle some partial shade. They need at least six hours of sunlight a day for fruiting and fall color. Give it well-drained soil and a moderate amount of water on a regular basis.
Add a few handfuls of compost to your backfill soil from the planting hole around the bare root system. We highly recommend the use of Nature Hills Root Booster during planting and top-dress your planting site with a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch to hold in moisture and insulate the roots from the cold winters.
Prune your Serviceberry after they flower because these shrubby trees flower on old wood. Alternately, you can renewal prune to maintain vigor by removing the oldest, fattest stems and least productive older branches out at the base of the plant. Remove no more than a third of the plant at a time every 3-5 years. Train as a single stem or keep as a multi-stemmed shrub or small tree with ease.
- Full Sun For The Most Fruit
- Moderate to Higher Moisture
- Adaptive to a Variety of Well-Drained Soils
- Prune After Flowering
- Easy to Grow & Highly Adaptable
Cole's Select Serviceberry seems to have it all - a hardy nature, 4-season interest, and delicious fruit you can use in jams and jellies (or leave for your wildlife). It's easy to see why Serviceberry shrubs have long been appreciated by gardeners, and why Cole's Select Serviceberry is likely to be your favorite new planting this year! Order now at Nature Hills!

Single Stem, Multi Stem, Shrub Form, Oh My!
Before you buy, make sure you know what you’re getting! Single stem, multi stem and shrub forms are different so read a bit about which we’re currently offering below.
Single Stem:
These are plants that have one stem coming from the ground. Plants can also be considered single-stem when lower branches are removed to raise the height of the branching. Sometimes, you will hear a single stem referred to as Tree Form.
Multi Stem:
These are plants with 3, 4, and sometimes 5 or more stems planted together in the ground in close proximity to form a clump. There are times when multiple stems are formed by a tree that branches at the soil line with more than one main stem.
Shrub Form:
These are bushy plants with many stems and branchings close to the ground. They are referred to as shrubs or bushes and are often shorter than their tree forms.
