Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones 5-9
Scent First® Passion Dianthus (Dianthus x 'WP Passion') is all red ruffles and no frills! Smooth petals in the most passionate red and neatly pressed and folded into these compact fragrant and fully double blossoms!
Passion Dianthus flowers grow atop a dense mound of neat and tidy silvery blue-green leaves that resemble grassy clumps! Often evergreen in mild winters, these are fantastic edging and border plants and perfectly sized for containers and planters. The spicy-sweet scent catches your nose, so be sure to snip a few for radiant bouquets, but leave a few outdoors for your butterflies and bees since they will enjoy these scarlet blossoms as much as you will!
The Scent First® line of Dianthus are long-blooming perennials, and as long as you can remember to deadhead, you’ll enjoy blossoms from late spring until frost. These are easy-care plants and deer resistant too!
Planting and Application:
Dianthus, or Garden Pinks as they’re also called, are natural edging and border plants. Their low growth and tidy, compact appearance cleanly define gardens of all sizes and fill in their own little area of the landscape without overcrowding other plants or growing where they shouldn’t. Their reserved growth habit makes them just as ideal for use in mixed planters and patio pots too!
Passion’s vibrant red color and cleanly ruffled blooms look fantastic in Cottage and perennial borders, cutting and pollinator gardens, and when used as facer plants to hide the bare leggy stems of larger perennials and shrubs.
- Vivid Red Ruffled Flowers
- Spicy-Sweet Fragrance
- Clean Mounds of Silvery Blue-Green Leaves
- Great for Pollinators & As Cut Flowers
- Edging, Container Gardens & Specimen
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Dianthus thrive in the full and very well-drained soil with moderate fertility and always appreciate a thick layer of mulch over the soil surface. Deadhead after flowering to keep the blooms returning all growing season. Prune in very early spring before new growth emerges.
