The Satomi Dogwood (Cornus kousa 'Satomi') is an outstanding ornamental for spring color and fall interest. This is a great choice for your yard as the spring blooms come a bit later in the season. When your other spring-blooming plants are beginning to fade, your Satomi Japanese Dogwood will just be getting started!

This extension of your yard's spring glory will begin with clusters of four-petaled, delicate pink flower-like bracts that stand out amid the landscape plantings. These flowers are nectar-rich beacons for beneficial pollinators!

As the blooms fade, the pointed, ovate leaves become prominent giving your Dogwood a lush green appearance for the summer months. The multi-stemmed growth is horizontally-inclined, creating a lovely symmetry and low canopy.

Late summer and fall bring red berries that resemble large raspberries that you and your local songbirds can both enjoy! Birds will flock to your yard to enjoy a treat from your Dogwood, but you can also sample them for a unique, natural snack. While not as tasty as other berries, the Dogwood berry is sometimes enjoyed primarily for its juice. As fall approaches you'll also begin to see your Dogwood's foliage change to a deep red that will certainly stand out amid the usual lighter red hues!

Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9, these deciduous trees drop their foliage to reveal bark that is grey and peeling which will draw your eye during the winter months!

Planting and Application:

Satomi Dogwood has a lot to offer as an ornamental planting! Year-round interest and even edible fruit for humans and wildlife make this an outstanding choice for your landscape. Plant these lovely understory trees in winding rows or in informal groups for a naturalized woodland setting! Dogwood looks best when you use an odd number of trees, artistically placed in an allée or even a zig-zag for best results.

Raise on a berm to further highlight this gorgeous tree and its four seasons of interest! It would look terrific in the center of a garden bed with lower plants to complement it. It could also stand alone in your front yard as a specimen focal point to draw the eye.

Gorgeous street trees, graceful shade trees, and even for privacy hedgerows and shelterbelts mixed with other flowering trees and shrubs! Keep the lower branching intact for screening en masse or in long rows mixed with other flowering shrubs and shrubby trees! You'll create wildlife, pollinator, and bird-friendly privacy havens with ease!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Satomi can grow in full sun and loves a rich organic, acidic soil that drains well is best, but tolerates just about any soil condition. They love having their root systems covered with a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch to keep the root system evenly moist and cooler. They do not like the sun to bake the roots beneath. Additional moisture weekly or as needed will also keep your plant happy. Flowering Japanese Dogwood Trees shows better cold hardiness and for sure should be used in areas where Dogwood Anthracnose is a problem as this beauty has no serious disease problems.

Prune them to shape when dormant, and remove water growth or suckers after flowering. Decide what you want to keep first, then remove crossed branches and branches heading into the interior of the canopy to open it up for sunlight penetration and air circulation.

  • Full Sun Trees
  • Needs Well-Drained Acidic Soil
  • Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Prune When Dormant
