How To Care For Tall Bearded Iris
The Renown Tall Bearded Iris is an easy-to-care-for perennial that thrives with basic maintenance. This easy-care Bearded Iris thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it an ideal selection for those looking to cultivate low-maintenance, drought-tolerant flowering plants. It is deer-resistant, pollinator-friendly, and adaptable to a variety of soil conditions, ensuring success in diverse garden settings.
Follow these simple care tips to ensure robust growth and abundant blooms:
- Planting Location – Select a site with full sun exposure, receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering.
- Soil Requirements – Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.1–7.5); avoid heavy clay or waterlogged areas to prevent rhizome rot.
- Planting Depth and Spacing – Position rhizomes just below the soil surface, with the tops slightly exposed; space plants 12–24 inches apart to ensure good air circulation and prevent disease.
- Watering Needs – Water moderately during the first growing season to establish roots; once mature, water only during extended dry periods.
- Fertilization – Apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring and again after blooming to promote healthy growth; avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that encourage excessive foliage over flowers.
- Deadheading and Pruning – Remove spent flowers promptly to encourage continued blooming and maintain plant vigor; in fall, cut back foliage to 6 inches to reduce disease risk.
- Dividing Rhizomes – Every 3–4 years, lift and divide rhizomes in late summer to prevent overcrowding and encourage better blooms.
- Winter Protection – In colder regions, apply a few inches of arborist mulch over rhizomes to protect them from harsh winter conditions, ensuring it is not too heavy to allow proper airflow and prevent rot.
