Sometimes showy plants are divas. They require a lot of care and coddling. Red Balloon® Viburnum (Viburnum x 'Redell') is the exact opposite of that! This show-off is super easy to grow, even for the novice gardener! Gorgeous upright and rounded shrubs, these midsized ornamental deciduous plants reach a 6-8 feet mature height and width.
The deep green leaves unfurl in early spring, followed by pretty white flower clusters in April and May. But Red Balloon® really revs up come late summer when the flowers are replaced by very showy clusters of bright red berries. The clusters are fist-sized and look from a distance as if the shrub is covered in sparkling ruby-colored balloons. The foliage also lights up the autumn with wine-red color until frost!
The quilted green leaves are heavily textured and the flowers look like enormous fizzy foamy clusters of white. If you plant it with Mohican or Alleghany Viburnum, the pollination will make the berries even more spectacular! Think of all the floral bouquets and fall décor craft projects you'll enjoy, indoors and out with these vibrant shrubs! Plant among Winterberry Holly bushes and other Viburnum for berry-licious displays in summer, fall and persisting into winter!
Planting and Application:
This mid-sized ornamental shrub doesn't take up a lot of room at the back of your border or along your fence. It will quickly grow to its full size with very little muss or fuss from you! But the show it will put on is twice that big! These are fantastic front and back-yard landscaping shrubs! You'll be in disbelief each spring and fall as your shrub alights in showy displays! Be sure to plant one or more in a very conspicuous place so you don't miss a minute of the show! Encircle a seating area in seclusion and color, or add life and color to a mixed-shrub border that also provides lush privacy and screening!
Incredible songbird habitats and wildlife draw, the blooms alone will support all of your local pollinators! Create shelterbelts, groupings and en masse swaths of plants that attract loads of backyard dwellers, but no deer! These shrubs form polite suckers at their bases and create thickets and naturalized swaths of incredible color but are readily controlled with a once-a-year pruning if spreading is not desired.
- Pretty White Flowers & Incredibly Showy Red Fruit Clusters

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Super easy to grow in part sun to full sun, and appreciates moisture, these are cold- hardy shrubs in USDA growing zones 4 through 8. Viburnum fruit best in full sun but will also grow and flower beautifully in partial shade. Preferring moist, well-drained soil, these are widely adaptable to most soil types and moisture levels once established! Prune only after the flowers fade, though you will miss out on those colorful berries! To control the size and maintain vigor without missing out on fruit, renewal prune by removing the largest and oldest stems each winter to rejuvenate your shrub, and suckers can be removed at any time down to the ground. Resistant to deer, Black Walnut tree juglone, and cold, there's little that fazes these deciduous shrubs!
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Adaptable to Most Well-Drained Soil Types
- Provide Mulched Beds & Moderate, Regular Moisture
- Prune After Flowering To Deadhead & Shape
- Deer Don't Prefer the Taste & Juglone Resistant
- Easy-Care & Low Maintenance
