Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Aim for a full sun location, providing at least six hours of direct sunlight daily; this ensures the most vibrant purple color and heaviest flower production. While the plant will tolerate light afternoon shade, you will see a noticeable reduction in the number and size of the flower spikes.
  • Soil: This perennial is happiest in consistently moist to wet soil and is one of the few that handles heavy clay well, provided it stays damp. If your site is sandy, incorporate plenty of aged compost or peat moss to drastically improve the soil’s ability to retain moisture, as this loosestrife dislikes drying out completely.

Watering Requirements

During the first season, treat your new planting like a moisture-loving perennial and water frequently until you see vigorous, established new growth. Once mature, Purple Lance-Leaved Loosestrife is tolerant of temporary drought but performs best in soil that never completely dries out. If watering becomes inconsistent during hot periods, expect the flower spikes to be significantly smaller and the plant to show stress, like yellowing lower foliage.

Pruning Tips

This perennial blooms on new wood, so all pruning should be performed in late winter or very early spring before new shoots emerge from the crown. Simply cut all the old, dead stems back down to the ground level. This technique clears out the old material and directs all the plant's energy into producing strong, fresh stems that will reliably bear the best flowers for the coming season.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a single dose of a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer, like a 10-10-10 blend, just as new growth starts to emerge in early spring. Purple Lance is not a heavy feeder, especially when planted in soil rich with organic matter. What you want to avoid is using a high-nitrogen feed later in the growing season, as this encourages lush but weak foliage that can become too heavy for the stems to support.

How to Use Purple Lance-Leaved Loosestrife In The Landscape

Rain gardens, water features and soggy spots around the garden are fantastic for Loosestrife. Tolerating rocky and gravel soil in Rock gardens or Pond-side.

Not minding average conditions in the Cottage garden, Pollinator and Wildflower gardens where they are a food source or beneficial pollinators.

Sized for larger containers and planters, both shade or sun for lovely patio and terrace additions. Readily naturalizing, Lance-Leaved Loosestrife fills tricky spots with lovely ground cover and texture.

#ProPlantTips For Care
