Purple Fountain European Weeping Beech Tree

Cascading purple limbs, the gorgeous contorted and weeping growth of the Purple Fountain European Beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Purple Fountain') will be sure to have heads turning, traffic slowing down, and neighbors for blocks coming by to ask you, "What is that tree?"!

Narrow, upright-growing, and arching branches that droop and sway in the breeze seem to shimmer with glossy plum-purple leaves! Each leaf features lovely, pronounced veins and toothy edges, and is set off by the lighter, almost gray bark. These gorgeous specimens have their own wild manner of growth that looks like they've stepped off the pages of a fairy tale story!

Those glossy purple leaves have a golden hue underlying the purple when the sun hits them and when the sun shines through! Purple Fountain Beech trees are deciduous trees that also have incredible golden umber fall color! Hardy to USDA growing zones 4-7, these trees have inconspicuous flowers in the spring and tiny spiky seeds in the fall. Don't worry about any mess; however, birds come to take care of these seeds for you!

Planting and Application:

The classic head-turning ornamental and focal point for your front yard planting, Beech trees are lovely stand-alone accents. But a weeping Beech like Purple Fountain is a sculptural work of art and sure to get the entire neighborhood talking! Plant them on a berm to further set them apart from your other landscaping and let those amazing branches sweep over the ground, clamoring over each other as they tumble and arch on their slender gray stems.

Purple Fountain Beech is slower growing and won't overpower your space, nor do they need much in the way of maintenance. They pretty much take care of themselves once established and they're long-lived trees too! Ideal for Asian and Zen-style gardens, rock gardens, or as the crowning jewel rising above a pond or water feature, they're the perfect focal point in a destination garden! Don't be sad to see winter arrive either! Once those leaves have dropped, you'll be able to enjoy the gray bark and contorted bare branches as the snows highlight them all winter!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Ornamentals like these cascading Beech trees need full sun to look their best and have the best color! Plant in enriched, moderately moist soil that's well-drained and has moisture access in the hot, dry summers. Provide a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist bark chips that extend out past the branches to prevent mud and dirt from splashing onto them and keep them clean. Minimal pruning is needed and should be done in the late winter or very early spring.

• Full Sun
• Moderate Consistent Moisture
• Well-Drained Enriched Soil
• Prune Rarely When Dormant
• Mulch Site Well
