Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Aim for full sun with at least six hours of direct exposure to ensure the heaviest crop of pink berries. While it handles partial shade well, fewer hours of sun usually results in a looser shape and less intense fruit color.
  • Soil: This shrub is highly adaptable and thrives in most soil types, including tough clay or rocky ground. If you have very sandy soil, mix in some organic compost at planting time to help the ground hold onto moisture and nutrients.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your Coralberry deeply twice a week to help the roots dive deep into the soil. Once the plant is established, it becomes quite drought tolerant and only needs supplemental water during long dry spells. If you notice the berries looking shriveled in late summer, it is a sign the plant needs a deep soak to finish developing its fruit.

Pruning Tips

Since this variety blooms on new wood, you should prune it in late winter or very early spring before you see any green growth. Cut the entire shrub back by about one third of its height to stimulate the fresh, vigorous stems that will carry the flowers and berries. Think of this annual trim as a haircut that keeps the plant's energy focused on producing a dense, tidy frame rather than getting leggy.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring as soon as the ground thaws to support the upcoming growing season. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers in the late summer or fall. Excessive nitrogen late in the year triggers soft, leafy growth that will not have time to harden off before the first freeze, leaving the plant vulnerable to winter dieback.

With the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Proud Berry® Coralberry (Symphoricarpos sp. 'Sophie' PP21226) the berries just keep rollin' on all fall! This great shrub not only fills your garden with beauty from spring to fall, but it also fills your vases with florist-quality greenery and berry branches all autumn too!

Spring starts with pink blossoms that gradually fade to white and will be accented by the bees and butterflies that flock to these blooms! Coralberry then grows beautifully arching blue-green stems and foliage all three growing seasons and adds garden interest all year. But, come fall when the pretty pink flowers have busted out into scads of almost fluorescent pink berries, you'll be singing "Proud Berry keep on burnin'!" at the top of your lungs!

Proud Berry® is a type of Snowberry from Proven Winners® ColorChoice® that is great year-round but its interest really peaks when other plants in your garden are winding down for the year. These berries fill that quiet transition time from summer to fall. The berries last deep into winter and the birds love them! All winter you'll enjoy the cascading stems beneath their burden of snow.

Planting and Application:

This healthy plant is also a little more compact than native Snowberry, so it fits in well with already existing plantings. Bred for the floral industry, Proud Berry® bushes are easy to cultivate and have a long vase life too! No need to work hard for florist quality cuts!

These colorful shrubs are ideal backdrops and garden accents, and even look great spilling over the edges of large planters and retaining walls! Easy care enough to use as mass plantings, and adding pops of fall color to mixed shrub borders, or filling in the more dappled or shaded locations around your landscape! Prune smaller for a tidy accent in a pot or patio planter.

Plant in rows for low hedges and privacy or in pinpoint groupings for wildlife, ornamental interest and screening, their love of moisture makes them ideal for Rain gardens and for use around water features. The bright pink plump berries will certainly be a conversation starter - indoors in vases or outdoors on the shrub or in outdoor planter displays! Line or dot a few among your home's foundation plantings for a unique focal point!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Snowberry bush varieties do best in full sun to part sun in the cooler of its favored USDA growing zones 3-7, and appreciate afternoon shade or partial sun in the warmer climates. Provide a moderately moist soil of any kind, so long as it is also well-drained. These are highly adaptable and moderate growers for easy, low-maintenance care! Blooming on new wood, prune in the very early spring before new growth emerges, or renewal prune by cutting out a third of the oldest, fattest, and least productive branches from the base of the plant.

  • Prune Early Spring When Dormant
  • Moderate Moisture
