Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This shrub performs best in full sun, requiring at least six hours of direct light daily to maintain its signature golden color and dense bloom production. While it can tolerate light partial shade, expect fewer flowers and a more open, "leggy" growth habit in lower light.
  • Soil: It thrives in well drained soil but is surprisingly adaptable to poor conditions. If you have heavy clay, mix in a few handfuls of compost at planting to improve drainage, as "wet feet" is one of the few things this tough plant dislikes.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water deeply twice a week to ensure the roots establish firmly in their new home. Once mature, Happy Face® Yellow is remarkably drought tolerant and can handle dry spells, though consistent moisture will reward you with a much longer blooming window. If the plant gets too dry for too long, you might notice the flowers fading early or the foliage looking a bit dull.

Pruning Tips

Potentilla blooms on new wood, so the best time for a trim is late winter or very early spring before new growth starts.
