Cheerful rays of sunshine! The Gold Drop Potentilla (Potentilla fruticosa 'Gold Drop') is a deciduous shrub with many, beautiful ornamental features. Your Gold Drop Potentilla is sometimes called a "Buttercup Shrub" for its adorable little buttercup-bright, yellow blossoms that pepper the top of the shrub throughout the summer months.

You're sure to marvel at how this delightful little shrub keeps on blooming, over and over, on its fine-textured, light-green foliage. It's the type of shrub that fits into almost anywhere and maintains its lively appearance all summer without any special care required from you. It has a compact form and is adaptive to a variety of conditions, including being drought tolerant. In fact, Gold Drop is very hardy overall and almost thrives on neglect.

When autumn arrives, your Gold Drop will continue its golden-hued brilliance when the foliage assumes a pleasing copper hue to close out the season. Wonderfully cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 2 to 7, these space-saving shrubs only grow to 2-3 feet in height and width.

Planting and Application:

Butterflies will love the cheerful, dainty single blooms as much as you will. This native shrub is a wonderful addition to a Butterfly Garden. Potentillas are wonderful little plants to include in your perennial garden or cottage garden. They are always offering color in summer and fall.

Plant one as a foundation plant or several for a low-growing, colorful border! These are wonderfully bright and cheerful facer plants and edging accents! Line hot walkways, paths, or along the sidewalk or roadside xeric hell strip without worry! Able to tolerate urban conditions, poor soil, and Rock Gardens.

Butterflies and bees adore these blooms, so use Gold Drop to brighten your Pollinator borders and bring butterflies to Perennial gardens and Cottage borders. Wherever you use plant them, then get ready to see the butterflies dancing! Nature loves the color yellow, and Gold Drop delivers this sunny hue in spades. Use a few in each of your garden beds to help tie the whole design together.

Fill hard-to-mow slopes and eroding hillsides and embankments with color. Try them as a mass planting to cover ground in a wide area. For mass planting, use staggered, zig-zagging rows to fill in your planting pattern 2 feet on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next. Mulch between plants and keep the new planting weeded until Gold Drop fills in completely.

Add them as spillers and fillers in large containers and be sure to include one or two for some colorful accents by your front door. They can even be used in city environments. In fact, Potentilla is a go-to, low plant for many urban designers. There aren't many ground-hugging flowering shrubs that put up with road salt, pet traffic, and pollution. Potentilla is even recommended on many Firescaping/Fire-wise lists.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

They are low-maintenance native cultivars that do best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. However, these little guys are pretty tough. They can handle a variety of soils and resist disease and insects. Once established, Gold Drop will tolerate very tough conditions and periods of drought. They love sunny, exposed areas and are easy to care for. A touch of fertilizer and some mulch around the plants will give your plants a great start to a colorful summer.

It is best pruned in late winter to control its size and shape. Pruning is simple and may only have to be done every other year or so until the plants have been in place for a few years or more. In late winter or early spring, simply remove the tallest and thickest stems out right to the ground leaving the thinner stems in place to flower profusely. It's that easy!
