Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Step by Step: How to Install a Plant by Number Garden

  1. Pick Your Plan: Once your kit and plants arrive, download the Sitting Garden PDF with diagram, plant list, and care instructions

  2. Prep Your Site: Clear the area of weeds and grass and define the bed's shape with soft curves or strong lines

  3. Lay Out the Design: Follow the included diagram to position your plants

  4. Dig and Plant: Dig holes twice as wide as the pot and plant at the same depth

  5. Water and Mulch: Water deeply and apply a 3 to 4-inch layer of arborist mulch to retain moisture and block weeds

  6. Maintain and Enjoy: Follow your guide for pruning, deadheading, and watering, and then sit back and relax in your new favorite spot

Caring for and Maintaining Your Sitting Garden

This restful garden combines easy-care shrubs, grasses, and perennials that require minimal effort to stay beautiful all year.

  • Water regularly during the first year using the Finger Test
  • Refresh arborist mulch each spring
  • Prune Forsythia after blooming in spring, and trim Spirea lightly to shape after flowering
  • Trim Catmint after its first flush of blooms to encourage rebloom
  • Cut back ornamental grasses like Little Bluestem in late winter
  • Japanese Maples need little pruning. Just remove dead or crossing branches in late winter
  • Cordyline can be grown in containers and overwintered indoors in zones below 8

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I plant this garden around a bench or seating area?

  • Yes. This design is intended to frame and enhance a seating space like a bench, swing, hammock, or reading chair.

Is the Cordyline perennial or annual?

  • Cordyline is perennial in zones 8 and warmer. In colder zones, treat it as an annual or grow it in a container you can move indoors.

Does this garden attract pollinators?

  • Yes. Catmint, Spirea, and Forsythia all attract pollinators like bees and butterflies to your garden.

Will the Japanese Maple provide shade?

  • Yes. Over time, the Bloodgood Japanese Maple will mature into a small tree that casts light, dappled shade, perfect for sitting and relaxing.

Can I include a fire pit or water feature in this space?

  • Absolutely. The 18 by 9-foot layout leaves plenty of room for a small patio element or garden focal point like a birdbath or fountain.
