Everyone loves poppies! Rich in history, the Poppy has long enjoyed a special place in people's lives. Once heralded for its medicinal properties and its symbolism, the Poppy is now most often prized for grace and beauty. The only downside of the Poppy in fact, is its short bloom period. However with Harlem Oriental Poppy, that is no longer a concern!
With Harlem Oriental Poppy you will not only enjoy an early summer bloom, but have a repeat performance again in late summer. Not only will you have a longer bloom period, but the foliage tends to be more durable as well, with a rich, green shade that is the perfect backdrop for the brilliant blossoms. Of course the flowers are outstanding, featuring upturned petals with delicate ruffles and a burgundy/rose shade that you won't want to miss.
It can tolerate poor soils, but does best in moist, well-drained conditions. Poppies aren't known for being good as cut flowers, but you can increase their vase life by clipping them while in bud, and sealing the stem with a lighter before immersing them in water. Plant Harlem Oriental Poppy anywhere you'd like a repeated show of color and dainty texture. They look wonderful in borders, scattered in a perennial bed or sprinkled across a hilly slope. Anywhere they reside is an ornamental boon.
The only problem with Poppies is that there aren't enough of them! These beauties of nature are remarkable, but just don't last long enough.
