Small yards often need plants that work all year-long. First Editions® Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius 'Jefam' PP 23,177) is a great choice to create a focal point in your landscape. This is a medium-sized shrub that was developed for its unique foliage colors.
Imagine a shrub in your yard that not only has the usual vibrant greens of a common shrub, but also features brilliant oranges and yellows, and maintains that color all season long!
Every spring, you’ll be thrilled to watch as new foliage emerges on this deciduous shrub. The leaves unfurl in a gorgeous color show, ranging from purple, to yellow, orange and red. Multi-lobed, textured edges contribute to the dramatic look and feel of the leaves.
We guarantee that you’ll fall in love with the delicate white cluster of enchanting blooms opening from gorgeous pink flower buds. After all, Ninebark is a relative of the Rose, and it produces pretty little flowers with the sweetest pale yellow centers.
Butterflies come in to take a sip before the flowers fade. Next up, the uncommon foliage steps into the forefront. In summer, the leaves look like they have been washed with a touch of bright, lime green paint.
In fall, the summer foliage deepens into amazing harvest tones of orange, yellow, reds and purples for another incredible show. Yet another fabulous ornamental display from this wonderful shrub!
Even in late fall and winter, showy red seeds stay on the bare branches until hungry birds eat them up. The older stems have that classic “Ninebark” peeling bark for added winter interest.
Amber Jubilee has an upright, rounded form and is relatively fast-growing and pest-resistant. It transplants easily, is low maintenance and will respond well to pruning.
This shrub was named in honor of Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee, and it is certainly a shrub worthy of a queen. Bring a little of its royal brilliance into your yard today. Order today!
How to Use First Editions Amber Jubilee Ninebark in the landscape
Rounded and dense in habit with a bold array of colors in glowing tones of orange, yellow and gold, Amber Jubilee stands out in the garden border or makes an eye-catching hedge.
We love the idea of using Amber Jubilee near a patio or deck. As you enjoy your morning coffee, we bet you’ll love studying the rich colors of the leaves.
It seems that the closer you look, the more you find with Ninebark. Bloom time is so special, too.
The overall shape of the plant is rounded, with arching branches as it matures. It becomes a nice, very controlled shrub that needs little pruning.
Use Amber Jubilee as an accent or nice rounded anchor in the corner of your foundation planting.
Need a little “spot privacy” through your yard? Use a single shrub in the lawn as a magnificent specimen screening plant. It was selected for its striking foliage and is certainly showy enough to carry off a starring role.
Or, plant several of them as a continuous hedge. In a long, continuous hedge, plant them 2 or 3 feet apart. You’ll measure from the center of one plant to the center of the next.
Check out all the colors of Ninebark for sale at Nature Hills. You might try having some fun in your landscape.
Why not recreate a stylish “ombre” effect? At the furthest end of your hedge, plant Diablo Ninebarks, then gradually change over to lighter and lighter leaved varieties.
An order for Ombre Ninebark Hedge might start with the deepest color planted farthest from your house. Use Diabolo, Center Glow, Summer Wine®, Amber Jubilee, then Golden Ninebark closest to your house.
And no one is saying that a hedge has to be straight, for heaven’s sake. Wiggle the line a little bit. Go 2 or even 3 plants deep in certain areas.
Amber Jubilee is an easy to grow and colorful deciduous shrub that makes a fantastic smaller hedge or screening plant. Imagine all of this fantastic foliage color from spring way into fall. This is a wonderful choice you’ll never grow tired of.
Add a wide mix of flowering and evergreen shrubs and trees nearby. Lilacs, Rose of Sharon, Yews, Landscape Shrub Roses, you name it. The glowing tones of orange yellow and gold of the Amber Jubilee complement a wide range of partner plants.
For a rugged, low maintenance look, try adding a layer of groundcover Juniper shrubs in front. Use different varieties of Junipers. Add Russian Sage and Ornamental Grass.
Get a cool large garden pot and fill it with something garish and unexpected like First Editions Tiger Eyes® Sumac to give a wild play on color. Both of those plants have incredible fall color, too!
Enjoy the process!
First, measure your yard. Then plan it all out on your computer or use paper, if you like. Order your plants from Nature Hills. Once your shipping tracking number is emailed to you, get out there and get your holes dug. When you plants arrive, follow planting guidelines that are included in every box.
#ProPlantTips for Care
This is a carefree, easy to grow plant. Amber Jubilee Ninebark is one of those not-so-fussy plants that will have the best color in sun but tolerates part shade.
They can tolerate most soils and really few of any concerns. Once established they can tolerate wet or dry soils but keep your plants stress free and give them some additional water during the dry periods.
When the plant is young, be sure to provide it supplemental water as needed. Once the roots are established in your soil, it becomes tolerant of periodically dry soils.
There really is no reason to shear it. Just allow it to take on its natural form.
For older shrubs that need a little “touch me up”, you can keep your shrub looking great with a 3 year renewal pruning in early spring. Take out a few of the oldest stems down to the ground. They can be added to a yard waste bag or added to compost pile.
Each year, you’ll aim to remove about 1/3 of the oldest stems a year. Leave the nice younger stems in place. In 3 years, you have a new shrub! Tip pruning can be done at most any time if needed without harming the plant.
Gardeners in deer country already know this, but deer will try any plant if they get hungry enough. However, Ninebarks are generally resistant to deer feeding.
Spray Deer Repellent according to directions for every new planting in deer country. It’s also a good idea to create temporary fences out of chicken wire for valuable new plants.
Every season of the year, the Amber Jubilee Ninebark is doing something. From delicate white blooms in spring to the fall foliage. Each leaf is highlighted with tones of red and purple. Even in winter, the multicolored bark makes this Ninebark appealing over the entire season
