Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season

Growing Zones 2-8
Such a deep purple plum that they’re as dark as night! The Nigra Hollyhock (Alcea 'Nigra') is a mysterious dark-flowered Hollyhock that is sure to turn heads! Take its 4-8 foot tall flowering spikes into account, and you have a plant that will stand out head and shoulders above the rest in more ways than one!
The silky satiny petals form big satellite-like blooms, giving your plant an exotic Hibiscus effect! The bees and butterflies will adore these nectar and pollen-rich flowers that bloom all summer long! Flowering from the bottom up, the tall flowering spikes last and last! After, just deadhead for a rebloom later in the summer that lasts through fall!
Nigra Hollyhocks are very cold-hardy biennials that form dense rosettes of textured leaves their first year, followed by a tall flowering stalk the second! Pups, aka daughter plants, can often form around the base of the parent plant, and sometimes these plants self-seed if you do not deadhead. These volunteers will grow and show off one of Nigras parent or grandparent plant colors!Planting and Application:
Nigra is a Cottage Garden must-have and supreme pollinator garden plant. Wonderful back-of-the-border plants and as focal points throughout the sun landscape! Snip a few stems for cut flower bouquets to bring the beauty indoors!
Hollyhocks look great in groupings and in rows throughout the garden, adding their height as anchors in garden beds, or standing tall at the corner of your home's foundation plantings.- Dark Purple/Near-Black Flower Spikes
- Big Green Textured Leaves
- Tall Dramatic Pollinator-Friendly Blooms
- Hardy Biennial Plant
- Specimens, Focal Points, & Back of the Border Accents!
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Hollyhocks are best planted in full sun in a well-drained area, plus need moderate regular moisture during the worst of the heat and summer sun. Deadhead as soon as the flowers fade and remove seed pods to clean up the tall stems if you wish. In the event of strong winds and storms, you can stake these tall flowering stems to protect them. Each fall you can remove the leaves and stems, trimming down to a couple inches above the ground and mulching the crowns for the winter.
