Intense purple-black foliage! The Midnight Wine® Weigela (Weigela florida 'Elvera') is a fantastic Proven Winners® ColorChoice® selection that produces the most intense, dark metallic purple-black foliage you can imagine! You'll enjoy season-long interest and color!
Midnight Wine® Weigela This Weigela is beloved for its consistently dark leaves, mounding habit, and low maintenance! If you can tear your eyes from the dramatic foliage, you'll notice the reddish-pink funnel-shaped blooms that appear in the spring in drifts that almost smother these bushes! Pollinators galore and charms of hummingbirds will flock to these highly ornamental flowering shrubs!
Midnight Wine® Dwarf Weigela is a lovely space-saving mini shrub that grows 12-18 inches in height and just a bit more in width, these are wonderfully adaptable deciduous flowering bushes throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 8! After the initial bloom, you may be lucky to enjoy a rebloom later in the season!
Planting and Application:
This marvelous low mounding, dwarf shrub is perfect for use in the front of a border or for edging! It is stunning as an accent plant or for a dramatic mass planting! Weigelas are also effective as a low garden and property-defining hedge for small places. It's perfect as facer plants to hide the leggy stems of larger/older shrubs, or add a shock of color in front of your foundation plantings that bump up the curb appeal with three seasons of color!
The dark foliage highlights the bright blooms, and looks incredibly beautiful paired with evergreens and other Wine® series Weigela! For a brilliant contrast, try pairing it with yellow foliage companions! Add color to Cottage borders, lining walkways and driveways, and insert bright pops of color to Pollinator borders! This pint-sized shrub is also perfect for container gardeners and porch and patio planters!

- Stunning Metallic Purple/Black Foliage!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Weigela shrubs are easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun, Midnight Wine® needs full sun for the best flowering and foliage color but will tolerate very light shade. However, you'll enjoy much better coloration and more blooms in 6 plus hours of direct sunlight a day! Doing best in average garden soils, Weigela enjoys moderate moisture levels. Weigela does need well-drained soils but is not particular on the soil type. Prune to shape immediately after flowering. A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture in the ground as well as insulates the root system from heat and chill.
Weigela won't need much pruning, or deadheading in order to rebloom. However, if you wish to give them some pruning, just be sure to do it right after that first spring flush of color. Weigela does benefit from a renewal pruning every few years, with the oldest stems removed that are not as productive to keep the shrub dense, loaded in blooms and lushly covered in foliage.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade Lover
- Well-Drained Enriched Soil
- Moderate Moisture Needs
- Easy Care & Low-Maintenance & Deer Resistant
- Prune After Spring Bloom & No Deadheading Required
