Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Aim for 6 or more hours of direct sun daily to ensure the deepest red fall color and heaviest berry set. While Low Scape Mound Chokeberry tolerates partial shade (3-5 hours), the fall color will be muted and bloom production will be noticeably lighter.
  • Soil: This plant is adaptable, thriving in average, well-draining garden soil. If you have heavy clay, amend the planting hole with compost to improve drainage. It tolerates consistently moist to slightly boggy conditions, but dislikes constantly dry, sandy soils without added organic matter.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, keep the soil consistently moist until the shrub is established. Once mature, it has good drought tolerance, but providing about 1 inch of water per week during dry spells will prevent stress that can lead to smaller berries and premature leaf drop.

Pruning Tips

This chokeberry naturally maintains a dense, mounding shape, so little pruning is necessary. It blooms on old wood, so any shaping should be done immediately after the spring flowering period to avoid cutting off next year's blooms. To rejuvenate a very old plant, you can use a technique called renewal pruning, removing the oldest, thickest stems right down to the ground in late winter.

Fertilizer Needs

Fertilize once in early spring as new growth appears using a balanced, granular slow-release fertilizer like a 10-10-10 or 14-14-14 product. Avoid applying high-nitrogen fertilizer late in the season (after mid-July), as this can promote tender new growth that will not harden off properly, making it vulnerable to winter damage.
