Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This Hosta thrives in partial shade to full shade, but a little morning sun (2 to 4 hours) helps intensify the brilliant yellow leaf centers. Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which will scorch the foliage and turn the vibrant margins brown.
  • Soil: Plant in rich, organic soil that drains well but holds moisture, much like a forest floor. If you have heavy clay, amend it with compost or pine bark to improve drainage; for sandy soil, add peat moss or compost to help retain necessary moisture.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist while your Island Breeze is establishing its root system during the first season. Once established, Hostas generally need about an inch of water per week, though you should increase this during hot dry spells to prevent the large leaves from crisping at the edges.

Pruning Tips

You can snip off the flower scapes near the base after the lavender blooms fade in late summer to keep the clump looking tidy. Once a hard frost hits in late fall and the foliage turns mushy, cut the entire plant back to the ground to remove hiding spots for slugs and overwintering pests.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer in early spring as new shoots, or "pips," begin to emerge from the soil. Avoid feeding after mid-summer, as late surges of nitrogen encourage soft, tender growth that won't harden off in time for winter.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Island Breeze loves partial sun though warmer climates should provide afternoon shade or full shade. Cold hardy and adaptable, Hosta isn't particular on soil type, any well-drained medium that is highly organic works for these easy plants. Best in moist soil that does not dry out for long, mulch the roots well to keep them cool, moist, and insulated. A generous 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch chips helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill.

Low maintenance, there's not much work for you! Once frosts arrive, Hosta is an herbaceous perennial that dies back to the ground and emerges again in early spring. Be sure to remove dead leaf matter from the area to prevent the spread of fungal issues and deter slugs. But it has excellent slug resistance and no disease issues! Divide your perennials every 3-5 years to maintain vigor.
