A tropical Hosta with bright colors glowing in the shade! The Island Breeze Hosta (Hosta x 'Island Breeze') has incredible variegation and wide, thick foliage! Vigorous growing, Island Breeze features dark-green foliage with striking yellow-green stripes down each center, highlighted with reddish-green stems.
The yellow stripes mature to chartreuse as the season progresses! The dark lavender flowers are born on 28-inch scapes, and call pollinators galore to the trumpet-shaped blossoms that appear in mid-summer! Even a few Hummingbirds will stop by for a visit!
Perfect for new gardeners, Island Breeze thrives throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 9 and grows into a wonderfully neat and tidy mound about 10-12 inches in height and up to 15-18 inches wide for an impressive yet diminutive display!
Planting and Application:
Shady gardens are natural locations for Hosta, adding lush color and coarse texture among Perennial beds and Cutting garden borders. Contemporary, formal plantings and informal cottage gardens alike benefit from these colorful perennials. Borders look high-style with long rows of Hosta, and so will the edges along beds, driveways, and shady paths. Butterfly gardens and cottage gardens will get a traditional look with the addition of a few of these colorful perennials!
Island Breeze looks gorgeous in containers and as a glowing specimen. Hosta are tough and versatile, shrugging off urban environments, roadside conditions, and rocky soil. Partnering fantastically with other shade perennials such as Fern or Bleeding Hearts. Or for a real statement piece, create your own Hosta garden for an impressively colorful display. After all, there are about a thousand different varieties of Hosta these days, in all shapes and sizes!
Give garden rooms the spa treatment by adding these refreshing plants around seating areas or meditation spots. Perfect for shady Asian and Zen-inspired gardens, lending a vibrant presence to areas for meditation and relaxation. In fact, any garden design looks more peaceful with a few Hostas!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Island Breeze loves partial sun though warmer climates should provide afternoon shade or full shade. Cold hardy and adaptable, Hosta isn't particular on soil type, any well-drained medium that is highly organic works for these easy plants. Best in moist soil that does not dry out for long, mulch the roots well to keep them cool, moist, and insulated. A generous 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch chips helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill.
Low maintenance, there's not much work for you! Once frosts arrive, Hosta is an herbaceous perennial that dies back to the ground and emerges again in early spring. Be sure to remove dead leaf matter from the area to prevent the spread of fungal issues and deter slugs. But it has excellent slug resistance and no disease issues! Divide your perennials every 3-5 years to maintain vigor.
