Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

The Yankee Blue Hosta (Hosta 'Yankee Blue') is a vigorous, fast-growing blue-green colored Hosta that will command attention in any garden or landscape! Yankee Blue has elongated wedge-shaped leaves with wavy margins that hold their blue color all summer! Then later in the season, the color changes to blue-green!

Nearly white flowers appear on tall scapes in mid-summer and attract loads of butterflies, bees, and Hummingbirds! Tuck a few blooms in your bouquets indoors, but leave a few for your pollinators. Once the blooms fade, remove the scapes to maintain the neat and tidy appearance of these fountain-like mounding perennial clumps.

Small and slow growing, but is worth the wait, Key West is sure to make a fantastic specimen throughout USDA growing zone 3 to 9 landscapes in the shade! Staying small and tidy, Hosta forms neat fountain-like mounds that are remarkably easy to grow for even the most novice or busiest gardeners!

Planting and Application:

This is a vivid easy-care perennial that is ideal for shady positions! Glowing in shaded poolside seating areas and lighting up woodland settings and shade gardens. Key West makes it easy to create a restful spot that fills bare ground and lights up the shade! Create a meditative space by including Hostas in your Zen gardens!

Mix with other brightly-hued shade-garden perennials like Astilbe and Coral Bells, and of course other Hosta! Spice things up with the equally lemony-gold Rainforest Sunrise Hosta, and Fire Island, and toss in some Island Breeze Hosta or Guacamole! Then use cute and colorful Maui Buttercups Hosta in the front of your Hosta garden border!

Happy in dappled and understory settings, as edging plants, foundation plantings, or in large garden planters. Key West offers effortless style for many years, making it a favorite for beginners and experienced gardeners alike. Underplant your flowering ornamental trees with this outstanding shade garden workhorse! Use as facer plants along the shady side of an evergreen hedge or your foundation shrubs for a clean transition between lawn and garden!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Also known as Plantain Lily, Hosta leaves need morning sun to bring out the best coloration, but too much sun will burn the leaves. This low-care herbaceous Perennial is ideal for full-shade positions in the hottest of their growing zone range. Hostas grow best in moist, well-drained, highly organic soils with a pH between 5.5 - 7.5. Sandy loam is better than clay because it provides more aeration for the roots. Add a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch to the soil surface, especially in dry shade conditions. Deadhead Hostas as soon as the flowers fade for a tidy look, and in fall when these herbaceous Perennials die back from the frost, so prune the mound clean and remove the dead foliage. Divide your Hosta every 3-5 years to maintain vigor.

  • Full Shade Perennial Also Tolerates Partial Shade
  • Moist Well-Drained Enriched Soil
  • Low-Maintenance & Remarkably Easy Care
  • Deadhead After Flowering
  • Prune Late Fall
  • Extremely Cold Hardiness & Humidity Tolerant

Being one of the largest gold Hostas, Key West is a shockingly beautiful and superb shade plant with a tropical flair! Order your own Key West Hosta today at Nature Hills Nursery!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Hostas need full sun or shade?

Hosta does best in full sun in cooler climates but does appreciate afternoon protection from the worst of the summer sun, especially in the hottest of their growing zone range. In the hottest climates, Hosta like partial shade or dappled shade, and some varieties will do great in full shade.

Where do Hostas grow best?

Hosta plants love enriched, well-drained soil that is moderately yet consistently moist throughout the growing season. They appreciate mulched garden beds.

Do Hostas come back every year? Are Hostas a perennial plant?

With vigorous carefree growth, Hostas are herbaceous perennial plants that will return year after year with little maintenance.

What do you do with Hostas in the fall? What do you do with Hostas in the winter?

Hosta leaves will die back after frost but the crowns and roots remain intact and dormant until next spring. Prune back the leaves once they turn brown in the autumn and remove them from the plant's area. For winter protection, add a layer of compost or mulch over the crowns to protect them from the chill.

Do Hosta attract hummingbirds or pollinators?

Hostas are loved by pollinators and hummingbirds! All walks of beneficial pollinators will show up to sip their nectar.
