Growing Zones 3-9
The gorgeous Shadowland® Hudson Bay Hosta (Hosta 'Hudson Bay') displays a fabulous gradation of color with its wide, bright blue margins and lime green jetting. These colors are a beautiful contrast to the dramatic cream-white middles! The big heart-shaped leaves cascade over each other in lovely fountains of foliage!
Being a sport of Eskimo Pie, Hudson Bay is a much more flashy variegated plant, and its foliage remains bright all summer. It displays short spikes of purple flowers in early summer that are very attractive to Pollinators like butterflies. If you're lucky, you might even see a curious hummingbird!
Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 9, Shadowland® Hosta is a tidy little ornamental foliage plant and grows to a neat mound up to two feet tall and wide! Urban conditions, cold, heat, humidity, and shade tolerant, these perennials are amazingly easy to grow!
Planting and Application:
Plant this strong, vigorous tricolored beauty where everyone can enjoy it! It's great for those garden beds underneath your beautiful backyard shade tree whose canopy casts more shade than lets the sun shine through. Skirting trees with these lovely perennials will equally benefit from the generous shade the trees provide. Large shrubs too will look better having their bare stems hidden with these facer plants from view without the worry about roots interfering with each other!
Hudson Bay is a low-care perennial and is ideal for shady positions, containers, and patio pots, and one of the most popular landscape ornamentals! Large planters and containers in the dappled shade around your patio or even a shaded balcony will benefit from the graceful presence of these impressive plants. The cool coloration and eye-catching growth will decorate garden rooms with sculptural décor.
Create a meditative retreat in your outdoor entertaining areas! Create Asian and Zen-inspired gardens with these lovely plants that embody relaxation. Contemporary plantings and informal cottage gardens alike benefit from these large perennials and other shade-loving plants. Borders look divine with long rows of Hosta skirting and tidying up their edges. So will your driveway and walkways, and shady paths.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Hudson Bay in an area that receives the right amount of light. The leaves need some morning sun to bring the rich color out. Too much sun will burn the leaves. It grows well in moist, well-drained, highly organic soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. When watering, it's important to lift up the leaves so the moisture can reach the roots directly underneath. Sometimes when watering from overhead, the leaves can act as an umbrella, leaving the roots as dry as they were before watering.
Low maintenance, there's not much work for you! Once frosts arrive, Hosta is an herbaceous perennial that dies back to the ground and emerges again in early spring. A generous 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch chips helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill. Be sure to remove dead leaf matter from the area to prevent the spread of fungal issues and deter slugs. But it has excellent slug resistance and no disease issues! Divide your perennials every 3-5 years to maintain vigor. Hudson Bay shows good slug resistance in the landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Hostas need full sun or shade?
Hosta does best in full sun in cooler climates but does appreciate afternoon protection from the worst of the summer sun, especially in the hottest of their growing zone range. In the hottest climates, Hosta like partial shade or dappled shade, and some varieties will do great in full shade.
Where do Hostas grow best?
Hosta plants love enriched, well-drained soil that is moderately yet consistently moist throughout the growing season. They appreciate mulched garden beds.
Do Hostas come back every year? Are Hostas a perennial plant?
With vigorous carefree growth, Hostas are herbaceous perennial plants that will return year after year with little maintenance.
What do you do with Hostas in the fall? What do you do with Hostas in the winter?
Hosta leaves will die back after frost but the crowns and roots remain intact and dormant until next spring. Prune back the leaves once they turn brown in the autumn and remove them from the plant's area. For winter protection, add a layer of compost or mulch over the crowns to protect them from the chill.
Do Hosta attract hummingbirds or pollinators?
Hostas are loved by pollinators and hummingbirds! All walks of beneficial pollinators will show up to sip their nectar.
