The ornamental Korean Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis brachytricha), is a stately attractive grass that blooms amazingly well, even in light shade.
Korean Feather Reed is a showy grass with beautiful seedheads and an overall attractive form. A warm-season grass that grows in a tidy mound of narrow, stiff, green leaves that are known for slowly spreading in a neat clump.
Holding its color well into autumn, frost does bring some bright yellow and tan hues to Feather Reed Grass blades. The upright growth resists flattening out until the heavy winter snows move in.
The fluffy seedheads are decorative and can be used in fresh or dried floral design and home decor! They also add texture and motion when left in the garden! Early on, they have a lovely pink tinge before the plumes mature to light tan as the seeds ripen, lending an airy, graceful appearance to the landscape.
How to Use Korean Feather Reed Grass In The Landscape
Somewhat relaxed and informal in partial sun, Korean Feather Reed Grass can serve as the main feature in a fall garden long after most other plants have given up! The blossoms arch and spill-over garden borders and beds in a graceful manner.
In full sun, the upright growth can also create formal rows, or low hedges providing some privacy until winter. A lacy green backdrop and upright accent in the mixed border and perennial beds.
Tough and resilient, you can also use Korean Feather Reed Grass in mass plantings to control erosion on slopes and naturalize those tricky, out-of-the-way areas. The ornate plumes also serve as lovely specimen plantings!
The tidy clumping growth means Feather Reed grass will do amazing as the upright feature and graceful addition to large containers and planters.
The moisture-loving qualities of Feather Reed flowering grasses mean they don't mind being planted in those low areas in the landscape or in high-moisture locations such as along ponds or streams, and water features.
#ProPlantTips For Care
Korean Feather Reed Grass does best in full sun and grows more upright and sturdy in it. However, this grass is one of the few flowering types of grass that are just as happy in the part shade and creates a more relaxed form in shady spots.
Tolerating some wetter soil and higher than average moisture, Feather Reed Grasses does not like to dry out. These fibrous root systems do need well-draining soil and cannot sit in water for long periods of time.
Feather Reed Grasses are urban environment tolerant and partly drought tolerant too! Making them great for along the street and in tough spots where the soil is poor, and even in heavy clay soils as long as it does not sit in water.
Cut all foliage and stems down to a few inches above the ground each year in late winter or early spring just before they start to grow. This gives you the neatest, tidiest clump and removes dead leaves that may choke out the root mound. It is best to plant and divide Korean Feather Reed Grass in early spring or early fall. Warm-season grasses may green up later in the spring, but really shine once the hot, dry summer weather kicks in!
Relaxed and classy, motion and form, you won't go wrong with the easy-going nature of Korean Feather Reed Grass in the landscape! Hurry and order yours today at NatureHills.com!
