Go ahead and dress your yard in spring's boldest hues! You'll never regret going for the hot, bold color of Girard's Fuchsia Evergreen Azalea (Rhododendron x 'Girard's Fuchsia'). This semi-evergreen Azalea is outfitted with bright fuchsia pink flowers in late spring. It might be hard to tell which is brighter...the blooms or the butterflies and Hummingbirds that come to visit them!

These flowers cover the shrub from top to bottom. Girard's Fuchsia Evergreen Azalea is a rounded shrub that grows large enough to make an impact but stays compact enough to fit just about anywhere you have partial shade. Work it into your garden design to lift a dreary corner.

Even if you are starting from scratch, you'll certainly love the sophisticated olive-green leaves that stay nice and lustrous. In fall, the foliage develops a fantastic reddish color that remains through spring. Commemorate a loved one who adored color with this special choice. You'll feel close to them as the blooms open for their long-lasting spring display. These flowering semi-evergreen shrubs help bring structure and color to the foreground of your planting.

If your winters are warm, the narrow red leaves will remain all winter. In cooler winters, the leaves drop and only hold at the very tip of the branches. Watch for fresh, bright green leaves to emerge in early spring. A bit later in spring, the spectacular flower show begins again. Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 6 to 9, these broad-leaved evergreens mature to a 3-4 foot tall and wide rounded ornamental flowering shrub.

Planting and Application:

Don't miss out on enjoying Girard's Fuchsia Evergreen Azalea as part of a collection or as a "signature piece" throughout your garden. People across much of the country are hunting for ways to improve the looks of their mature plantings. This natural hybrid Azalea coordinates beautifully with other cultivars, but can also hold its own as a showy specimen. Don't forget the charms of Girard's Fuchsia Evergreen Azalea add to mixed shrub borders!

Add a sizzling style to the partially shaded areas of your garden. Tidy, compact branching paired with welcome color in both spring and fall make this an excellent choice to heighten your outdoor experience. Work in a seating area nearby to maximize the opportunities for you to enjoy your plantings. Live large, even in a courtyard or small space garden. Enliven the edge of the woodland garden with a serpentine planting of these bloomers. No one can miss the hot hue of the red-purple flowers...and the reddish fall color adds another beautiful season of interest!

Plant them in a staggered, zigzagging pattern three feet apart on center, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next. Leverage an informal hedge as a showy backdrop in the partial shade cast by a fence.

#ProPlantTips For Care

Grow these Azaleas in partial shade. They need at least four hours of sunlight a day but will need protection from the sun in the afternoon. Air circulation also keeps plants happy and healthy. Pull them out away from buildings and tight corners to keep the foliage dry.

Shallow-rooted Rhododendrons and Azaleas prefer moist, acidic, well-drained soil. Add additional soil in a planting mound or raised bed if you have heavy, clay soil that retains moisture for a long time. During planting, add handfuls of compost, peat moss, and Nature Hills Root Booster. Plant them high, with an inch of root ball showing, then cover them with pine needles or pine straw as mulch.

Ensure your Azaleas receive a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Reapply your layer of mulch every year, then pull it back away from touching the main trunk. Pull pine bark or pine straw mulch up to cover the root system Use 3-4 inches of pine bark or pine straw mulch to add acidity and improve your soil over time.

Weed around the base of these beautiful plants. Avoid growing groundcovers nearby, as the root system won't like competition. Apply a good, organic, slow-release fertilizer in early spring according to the label. Use a formula for flowering, acid-loving "ericaceous" plants. Prune to shape after flowering is done. You can also plan ahead to determine which branches you'll clip, and take them early for indoor cut flower arrangements.

  • A Winner in Partial Shade
  • Acidic Enriched Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture & Loves Mulched Beds
  • Prune Immediately After Spring Flowers Fade
  • Easy-Care, Vigorous Flowering Shrub

Azalea and Rhododendron Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to plant Rhododendrons?

Azaleas and Rhododendrons prefer partial shade (both dappled shade all day or morning sun with afternoon shade). Plant in a slightly acidic, consistently moist, enriched, and well-drained soil location for best results. Their shallow roots dislike soggy soil but thrive with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over their surface.

How big do Rhododendrons get?

Girard's Fuchsia Evergreen Azaleas can grow 3-4 feet in height and in width, when grown in optimal conditions.

Are Rhododendrons low maintenance?

Azalea and Rhododendron shrubs are very easy to grow and low maintenance. Water during drought, prune only after flowering and fertilize with an acid-loving organic, slow-release flowering plant fertilizer.

What is the difference between Rhododendrons and Azaleas?

All Azaleas are Rhododendrons but not all Rhodondendrons are Azaleas. Azalea tends to be smaller-sized with smaller leaves and stems, while Rhododendrons can be larger with stout branching and larger bloom trusses. There can both be either deciduous or broad-leaved evergreens.
