Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes

Growing Zones 3-9
Rare and hard to find, the German Red Rocambole Garlic (Allium sativum 'German Red') is a fantastic hardneck Garlic variety that forms between 8-10 large cloves each! When regular garlic simply doesn't cut it anymore, the German Red has got you covered! Sure, for most, garlic's taste is plenty pungent but for true spice connoisseurs, there's nothing better than a homegrown German Red Garlic.
This specimen is known for its reliable production of large, round cloves. Imagine, never struggling endlessly to peel another clover ever again. Or, at least until you use up what you've grown! A Rocambole Garlic is a classic easy-to-peel heirloom variety!
Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 3 through 8, German Red Garlic grows 18-24 inches tall and has an early to mid-season harvest. Don't feel the need to rush that use though! German Red can be kept up to six months in optimal storage conditions and it is said the flavor intensifies with time.
Using German Red Garlic
These edible bulbs are considered one of the best-tasting Garlic varieties. Easy-to-peel light brown with a purple-tinged base, the German Red is prized for its flavor in your fresh and cooked recipes.
Grown for its wonderful classic garlic flavor, with a strong, medium-hot flavor, and is great when roasted, sautéed, or raw! The beautiful scapes can have single and double curls and rosy flowers when allowed to. Boasting a good shelf life, store yours in decorative braids or cool storage.
- Full-Bodied Rich Spicy True Garlic Flavor
- Purple Tinged - Often Produces Double Cloves
- Large Cloves & Easy To Peel
- Strong & Reliable Grower in Cold Conditions
- Stores Well Up To 6 Months
#ProPlantTips for Care:
This is a very robust and easy-to-grow variety of German Red Garlic that does well in cool climates in the Northern US but handles warmer climates beautifully. Plant in full sun for the fastest growth and strongest stems. Plant in enriched, loose, well-drained soil with moderate moisture access.
Plant the cloves (called bulbils) individually with a small portion of the bulb poking above the soil, root side down, and you'll want to plant this heirloom variety about six inches apart and two to three inches deep. Harvest when tops start to dry, clean, and store in a cool, dry location with plenty of air circulation.
- Full Sun
- Loose Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Moisture
- Harvest When Tops Are Dry
- Easy To Grow & Great For Beginners
If you live in a colder climate but still want to try your hand at growing your own garlic, German Red is the hardneck garlic for you. Order yours today from Nature Hills!
