Description
Garden Candy® Candy Apple™ Itoh Peony (Paeonia x 'Smithopus10') covers itself in fully double, deep crimson-red flowers in early summer. Each bloom opens 4 to 6 inches across on a neat, rounded plant about 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, and it is hardy in zones 3 through 8.
Itoh peonies are crosses between garden peonies and tree peonies. They carry the large, rich flowers of a tree peony on a plant that dies back to the ground each winter like a garden peony. Most Itohs bloom in yellow, cream, peach or pink, so a true double red like Candy Apple is a rare find in this group.
The stems are strong and semi-woody, so the heavy flowers stand up without staking, and the petals hold their color for weeks. The leaves stay clean through summer and turn maroon in fall, which gives the plant a second season of interest. Use it in the middle or back of a border, along a foundation, or on its own where the rounded shape can show.
Plant it in full sun for the most flowers. Average, well-drained garden soil suits it, while soggy ground can rot the roots. Water deeply through the first season, and once it is established it handles dry spells. Deer and rabbits tend to leave it alone. Like all peonies, it is toxic to cats, dogs and horses if eaten, so plant it away from where pets and livestock graze.
New Itoh plants often take a couple of seasons to settle in before they bloom heavily, and they get fuller every year after that. Add Garden Candy® Candy Apple™ Itoh Peony to your cart for bold red color in early summer.
