Description
A Fragrant Climber That Finally Shows Up on Time
Most false hydrangea vines make you wait. You plant them, watch them sit quietly for a few years, and wonder if they will ever put on the show you were promised. Schizophragma hydrangeoides 'Minsnow3', sold under the Proven Winners® name Flirty Girl®, was selected specifically to break that pattern. This cultivar, developed in France by Pepinieres Minier, blooms at a younger age than the species and other selections, producing generous clusters of lacy white flowers while the plant is still getting established.
What the Blooms Look Like
The flowers appear in early summer and are worth the wait even in a good year. Each bloom cluster is a lacecap-style arrangement: small fertile flowers at the center ringed by larger, sail-like sterile sepals in creamy white. The effect is airy and elegant rather than heavy, and the lightly sweet fragrance carries on a warm breeze. Clusters can be quite prolific, covering the vine from early to late summer in a way that draws admiring looks from neighbors who did not realize climbing plants could do this.
Beyond the Blooms
Spring announces itself on Flirty Girl® with a flush of purple-tinted new shoots, a subtle but appealing detail before the foliage matures to deep, glossy green. The heart-shaped, serrated leaves are attractive all season and turn a soft yellow in fall before dropping. In winter, the vine reveals its exfoliating brown bark, which peels in thin layers and gives the plant a handsome textural presence even without a single leaf on it.
Where It Fits in the Landscape
This vine is especially useful in the shady corners of the garden that leave most flowering plants struggling. A north- or east-facing wall, a fence that never sees afternoon sun, or the shaded side of a pergola are all places where Flirty Girl® will climb happily and bloom well. It clings by adhesive stem rootlets, meaning it does not need a trellis as long as it has a rough surface to grip. Brick, stone, wood, and tree bark all work beautifully. Growing it up the trunk of a large tree is one of the most striking ways to use it, creating a living column of white flowers each summer.
A Long-Lived Garden Investment
Schizophragma hydrangeoides is a long-lived genus, with well-established plants known to thrive for 70 years or more in the right conditions. Flirty Girl® is patient and forgiving once it roots in, and while it may take a season or two to really hit its stride on a new structure, the years of performance that follow make it one of the more rewarding woody vines you can add to a shade garden.
