FlowerFull® is one of the more sun-tolerant hydrangeas, but in very hot afternoon sun (especially in zone 7 and higher), the flowers may fade faster and the plant will require more water to prevent wilting. Partial shade is perfectly acceptable, but full sun generally yields the sturdiest stems.
Soil: Smooth Hydrangeas love organically rich, well-draining soil—think of a consistently moist sponge, not a bog. If you have heavy clay, amend the planting hole generously with compost and shredded bark to improve drainage. For sandy soil, adding the same organic matter will help the soil hold necessary moisture and nutrients for steady growth.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, keep the soil consistently moist to help the root system establish itself; water whenever the top 2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Once mature, FlowerFull® is quite drought tolerant, but for peak performance, do not let the soil dry out for extended periods. Inconsistent watering during summer stress will quickly lead to smaller, drooping flower heads and dry, scorched leaf edges.

Pruning Tips

This variety blooms exclusively on new wood, meaning the flowers develop on the growth that emerges in the current season. The ideal time for pruning is in late winter or early spring, just before new growth begins, while the plant is fully dormant. Cut the entire plant back by about one-third to one-half; this technique is basically a strong haircut that encourages robust, new stems that are better equipped to hold up the substantial flower heads.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs, like a 10-10-10 ratio, in early spring as soon as you see new growth emerging.
