Compact brilliant white stars all summer long, the Summer Stars Delphinium (Delphinium grandiflorum 'Summer Stars') is graced with the most elegant and airy star-shaped flowers nearly all summer long! Each floret is brilliant white and accented with dark black stamen in the centers, floating all along upright wands!
There are about 300 species of this flowering plant in the family Ranunculaceae, and sometimes referred to as Larkspur, Delphinium gets its name from the Latin for 'dolphin'. Like its cousins, Summer Nights and Summer Mornings Delphinium, Summer Stars has lush, finely-dissected foliage that remains compact and deep green all growing season! Lovely even when not in bloom! This refers to the nectary, which resembles a dolphin.
Summer Stars has better heat tolerance and is earlier blooming than other Delphiniums. But it displays the same deer and cold tolerance as the rest of this illustrious family! Small and space-saving, Summer Stars shines in USDA growing zones 3 through 9 with ease!
Planting and Application:
Some companion plants that provide season-long color with Delphiniums are Coneflowers, Dahlias, Daylilies, or Ornamental grasses and they are traditional Cutting Garden and Cottage Border plants! Any garden becomes a Butterfly garden because pollinators, hummingbirds, and admirers will flock to these lovely spires of white flowers! Plant in groupings or rows to maximize this pristine color and provide the max draw for the bees and butterflies!
Like others in this Series, Summer Stars pairs beautifully with the light blue Summer Blues Delphinium and works as edging and front-of-the-border facer plants! The mounds of green foliage look gorgeous all year round and are the perfect backdrop for these wands and for other perennials! Add lacy finery to Rose gardens, perennial borders, and Rock Gardens alike!
Dwarf Delphiniums are lovely gift plants and ideal for tucking into small yards, container gardens, or those bare spots within an established landscape with ease! Perfect focal point flowers in mixed planters so dress up a patio or front porch planter with elegant finery! The fine textured foliage becomes soothing greenery and fillers, even when the plant is not in flower!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Dwarf Delphiniums grow best in full sun and love a touch of afternoon shade, in locations with enriched, well-drained soil with a basic pH. If your soil is naturally acidic, adding lime will help to provide these conditions. Delphinium appreciates a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch over the roots. Provide regular moisture all summer for best results and to support the huge blooms.
These dwarf-sized stems rarely need any staking when planted in a protected area, so they remain upright no problem! But if you do grow them in windy locations, a firm stake will help support their stems. Deadhead early enough and you'll enjoy a rebloom until fall, then as the foliage turns yellow, prune back the leaves and stems close to the ground and water it in well one last time before the ground freezes.
Delphiniums are also heavy feeders. The addition of compost or manure to the soil, as well as a granular fertilizer, will result in healthier, stronger plants. It is recommended you wear gloves when handling these plants since some can develop skin sensitivity. Always monitor young pets and young children around Delphinium.
