Growing Zones 3-7
Dramatic Blue Butterfly Delphinium (Delphinium grandiflorum 'Blue Butterfly') has a wonderful true sky blue flower. This deep, gentian-blue trumpet-shaped flower is a great contrast with its forest-green slender foliage, blooming early to mid-summer. Each delicate floret is accented by a baby blue to near-white 'bee' at its center! Bees, Butterflies, and Hummingbirds will flock to these vivid landing pads!
These spires of darling blue blooms rise from a dense cluster of deeply-incised green leaves. Growing to about 12-15 inches wide, there’s no reason to worry about sacrificing space to enjoy these herbaceous perennials anywhere in the sun! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 3-7, Delphinium are very cold-hardy!
Commonly called Chinese Larkspur, the vertical wands are loose, free-branching, and feature loose racemes of ultramarine blue flowers! Blue Butterfly is delightfully compact growing up to 18-inches tall. They are more heat tolerant than most Delphiniums, plus you will not have to worry about deer and rabbits as they are not attracted to this space-saving plant.
Planting and Application:
Little Blue Butterfly Delphinium attracts a host of butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds to your garden. Enjoy the show as they fill their bellies with sweet nectar! Turn any garden into a pollinator garden with these vivacious blooms! Get your vases ready to be filled with sky-blue flowers when you include these traditional perennials in your Cottage border and cutting gardens!
No matter what type of garden you are adding to your landscape this plant will add that amazing pop of blue color! Plant them in groups among the border, as edging, in long winding rows, and they do great in containers! Dwarf Delphiniums are equally suitable in large planters and porch pots in the sun as vertical focal points and filler plants. Their adaptable nature means they readily work in Rock Gardens and around your mailbox garden!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Delphinium Blue Butterfly needs a rich, moist soil that is well-drained in a sunny location and should never experience drought. Keep the soil moist but never soggy. They do appreciate some afternoon shade. Water at the base of the plant and keep the foliage as dry as possible. Add 3-4 inches of organic mulch around the base of the plant to help maintain moisture and buffer heat and cold.
These dwarf-sized stems rarely need any staking when planted in a protected area, so they remain upright no problem! But if you do grow them in windy locations, a firm stake will help support their stems. Remove spent heads to produce more flowers throughout the season, then as the foliage turns yellow in the fall, prune back the leaves and stems close to the ground and water it in well before the ground freezes.
Delphiniums are also heavy feeders. The addition of compost or manure to the soil, as well as a granular fertilizer, will result in healthier, stronger plants. It is recommended you wear gloves when handling these plants since some can develop skin sensitivity. Always monitor young pets and young children around Delphinium.
