You will enjoy this dramatic Elephant Ear foliage plant for its incredible display! Showy purple-black leaves emerge from the center and cascade downward. A single leaf of Black Coral Colocasia (Colocasia esculenta 'Black Coral') can grow up to two feet long! And although the coloration is deep and dark - they are glossy jet black and catch available light! Even in partially-shaded areas!

The supersized leaves are held on strong stems. With their interesting arrow shape and long stalks, the leaves catch the breeze to bend and sway in an energetic dance. Tropical good looks and stunningly easy care requirements make these ideal as living structural and architectural décor!

Although tender Black Coral Elephant Ears are not hardy in cold winters, they can still be enjoyed further north. Choose to grow it for a single season as an effective annual plant. Gardeners in Zones 3 - 6 can get many years of joy from a single plant. Simply dig and lift the Colocasia corms each fall, bringing them indoors to overwinter in a cool, dry location and replanting in spring.

Planting and Application:

Black Coral Colocasia is an excellent choice for a perennial backdrop in Zones 7 - 11. They tolerate wet soils, which is a very useful trait! Plant them in damp areas, including along the edge of a water feature. Contrast their delicious depth with the bold hues of Canna Lily and other Elephant ears. Or, place them at the foot of a boulder as a focal point in a Zen Garden. Spruce up a Rain Garden, sunny poolside garden, or groupings around your seating and entertaining areas for pinpoint privacy!

Black Coral Colocasia can also be kept as accents in oversized containers to jazz up a balcony or add a huge visual impact to your front porch on either side of your door. Dress up in an upscale urn that sets these plants even higher and adds architectural texture to your garden beds and borders! Imagine a pair of these welcoming you to the start of a path or the entrance to your side yard.

  • Intensely Dark Foliage - Very Showy
  • Prominent Veins & Textured Surface
  • Perennial Zones 7 - 11 & Annual in Zones 3 - 6
  • Huge, Downturned Leaves Add Sculptural Element
  • Excellent Backdrop or Thriller in Containers

#ProPlantTips for Care:

For the best coloration, grow Colocasia in full sun or partial shade for the most color and plant them in organically rich well-drained soil. Colocasia are tolerant of both average to high moisture locations. Gardeners in zones 3-7 may overwinter the bulbs indoors. As soon as the temperatures drop below 40°F, dig the bulbs up, brush off excess soil and store them in dry peat moss or wood shavings. Place in a warm, dark and dry place with a temperature no higher than 50-60°F.

  • Grow in Full Sun or Partial Shade
  • Moist Well-Drained Soil
  • Appreciates Regular Fertility
  • Prune After Foliage Yellows
  • Cold Zones Can Lift & Overwinter Corm
  • Low-Maintenance Annual in Cold Climates
