The Concha California Lilac (Ceanothus x 'Concha') is one of the first-named and longest-cultivated Ceanothus in existence! It was first named and sold in 1946 from a little nursery in California where its parentage is the well-known wild-growing native.
You're probably asking, "Why the history lesson?" Well, because when you buy and plant these gorgeous shrubs, we want you to know that these beauties have truly stood the test of time and will be great additions to your garden. If they've been on the market for almost 75 years then you know that there are a lot of pleased customers! We hope to add you to that number!
These hardy West Coast natives have gracefully arching branches that are covered in deep green, broad-leaved evergreen leaves. In the spring they are covered in reddish-purple buds that typically open late spring into early summer with rich bluish-purple flower clusters. These blooms literally cover the plant for weeks and are stunning from near or far in the landscape!
But it's best to be near these flowering ornamentals because they're sweet, lightly fragrant and usually covered in butterflies and beneficial pollinators! Maybe scoot a bit further away and let the timid Hummingbirds in from time to time as well! Other wildlife - especially mockingbirds, finches, and quail - love Concha California Mountain Lilac for both the cover it provides and the seeds it produces. (Deer, on the other hand, seems to find it pretty unappetizing).
Planting and Application:
Concha California Mountain Lilac grows in some of the harshest locations around your landscape and looks great in spite of them! Poor soil, clay, saline, and coastal conditions, even full sun all day - these beauties won't even break a sweat! These are also nitrogen-fixing plants, that light Legumes, create nitrogen at their own roots, and help everything around them grow a bit greener! Plus they are vital resources for pollinators in your area!
Growing to a mature height of 4-6 feet and a spread of 4-10 feet, these easily fill large swaths of bare ground by naturalizing politely and filling in as a lush, fast groundcover, screen, en masse living wall, or just long rows of bird and pollinator-friendly year-round greenery that sports gorgeous blue blooms!
Grow it as a shrub or limb it up into a multi-trunked tree form, Concha Lilacs are fantastic specimens and focal points in the garden! But also incredibly as hedges, privacy and screening, backdrops, and foundation plantings where their year-round green leaves really shine!
Concha California Lilac can be an important plant to help protect your property from the ravages of wildfire. This native plant is recommended for use as part of the defensible space near homes and structures. We recommend calling your state forestry agencies and local fire protection district to request a region-specific property assessment.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Concha Mountain Lilacs don't need (or especially like) coddling or fussing! They thrive on low water and in challenging soil. Too much water and too-rich soil is a surefire way to kill them. Adapted to a wide range of different types of soil and thriving in poor soil. Give young plants low amounts of regular water during their first season only. This will help their roots establish themselves in your soil. Prune right after blooming to remove spent flowers and to keep your plant looking even and full.
- Full Sun
- Moderate to Low Moisture Needs Once Established
- Any Well-Drained Clay, Sand, Poor & Rocky Soil
- Tolerant of Coastal & Saline Conditions
- Deer Seldom Bother It
- Grows Without Supplemental Water Once Established
- Nitrogen-Fixing Plant
