Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Shipping

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

*If you have found your zone already, it will be highlighted in the table below.

For Cold Climates Northcountry Blueberry Bush

  • Very Cold Hardy
  • Compact Shape
  • Perfect for Containers
  • Delicious Wild Blueberry Flavor

Half-High, Early Mid-Season

Northcountry Blueberry (Vaccinium 'Northcountry') is a very cold-hardy Half-High. These are natural hybrid crosses of the Northern Highbush (Vaccinium corymbosum) and the Lowbush Blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium). Half-Highs bring the best of both parents and are wonderful for smaller yards.

Introduced in 1983 by the University of Minnesota, the Northcountry was first selected for its low stature and resistance to winter injury. It should be the first choice for those desiring to grow Blueberries in cold winter areas.

Northcountry is a very compact, low-spreading plant that will require little pruning in the first few years. The abundant fruit has an attractive, sky blue color and a sweet, wild Blueberry flavor.

These small to medium-size berries are great for a variety of uses, including fresh eating, baking and in jams and preserves. Wonderfully productive, Northcountry is known to produce 3-5 pounds of fruit off of a single mature plant.

It displays a profusion of dainty white-tinged pink bell-shaped flowers in spring. This is followed by clusters of fruit which are displayed on the outside of the plant. This display makes the Northcountry a wonderful ornamental plant for the landscape.

Intermix the Northcountry Blueberry cultivar in your landscape for a wonderful edible ornamental effect. You'll love it all growing season, including the brilliant red fall color, too.

Its dwarf compact size also makes it a great candidate for a patio container plant. The Northcountry requires very acidic soil, so be sure to pot the plants with an acid potting mix. One that is recommended for Azaleas, Camelias, and Rhododendrons. Add some extra peat moss if possible or enough soil Sulphur to get the pH of the soil to 4.5-5.5.

In the ground, Northcountry Blueberry prefers organically rich soils that are well-drained. As with container growing, the pH must be below 5.5 for the plants to thrive.

The plants will tolerate full sun in most areas with high summer humidity. In areas with dry, hot summers give it protection from the hot afternoon sun. The shallow, fibrous roots need to be kept moist and cool, so Northcountry appreciates a good organic mulch both in the ground and in containers.

Plant with other cultivars for improved fruit production and extended harvest. Blueberries are delicious, exceptionally nutritious, and high in antioxidants. Try them fresh or used in cobbler, cake, sauce, jam, jelly, or syrup. There is nothing better than super fresh Blueberry pancakes made with fruit you grew yourself.
