Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

Bloom PeriodSummer, Fall

Growing Zones 9-11
Dramatic and opulent, the pointed petals and double blooms of the Black Jack Dahlia (Dahlia 'Black Jack') look perfect for a gothic romance novel-style porch, patio, or garden! The ombre effect of the dark burgundy red petals darkens to a near-black crimson center. Each big bloom is packed with petals that have a lovely opalescent sheen!
The slender dark crimson stems pump out the blooms all summer through frost and call pollinators and hummingbirds galore! These blooms are huge and are dramatically backed by upright mounds of dark green toothy and lobed foliage. Low maintenance, easy-to-care-for, Dahlia tubers can be forced as indoor houseplants and greenhouse blooms!
Black Jack are perennial tubers throughout USDA growing zones 9 through 11, but great houseplants and seasonal annual accents everywhere else! The tubers can be dug right after the foliage dies back, but before the ground freezes, to store for the winter in a box of slightly damp sand or in a paper bag in a frost-free but cool storage area such as a garage or shed.
Planting and Application:
Add luxurious rich color to your garden beds and borders with these tall blooms. The elegant stems and mounded leaves add their dramatic coloration to pathways and walkway border gardens. Use in the garden for taller, back-of-the-border accents throughout Rose gardens, cottage borders, and as dramatic cut flower garden additions!
Black Jack Dahlias are very easy to grow in containers and planters to add incredible height and depth to container gardens, porch, and patio planters, and as fantastic fillers, specimens and accents to your balcony, deck seating, and entertaining areas where Black Jack is sure to be a conversation starter!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Dahlia blooms all summer without fading in full sun to partial sun locations and prefers a wide range of soil types, as long as it is well-drained. Soak the tubers for a few hours before planting and plant them with their fingers spread out gently and pointing downwards. Water well and maintain consistent moisture, adding 3-4 inches of mulch helps considerably.
Dahlia tubers can be dug after frost and stored in all growing zones! Dig up the plants after the first frost to save your tubers for the next year. Let them dry out, and then place in paper bags or boxes in a cool place and sprinkle a little water on the tubers periodically to keep them from drying out. In a frost-free climate, leave the tubers in the ground and trim the stems once they die back.
- Full Sun to Partial Shade
- Well-Drained Organic Soil
- Easy Care Perennial
- Moderate Consistent Moisture
- Lift Tubers in Cold Growing Zones in Fall After Frost
- Appreciates Monthly Fertilizer
