Where to Plant

Sunlight: Sprinter Boxwood thrives in full sun to partial shade, needing at least 4 to 6 hours of direct light. While it tolerates more shade than other evergreens, getting plenty of sun ensures the foliage remains dense and maintains its bright green luster throughout the winter.
Soil: These shrubs prefer moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If you are dealing with heavy clay that holds too much water, plant them in a slight mound or "high" in the hole to keep the roots from suffocating in standing water.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your Boxwood deeply twice a week to help the root system reach deep into the soil. Once established, this variety is quite drought tolerant, but inconsistent moisture during extreme heat can lead to "bronzing" or orange-tinted leaves. Aim to provide a deep soak at the base of the plant during dry spells rather than frequent light sprinkles.

Pruning Tips

This cultivar is prized for its naturally fast growth and rounded shape, so it requires very little maintenance. If you want to shape it, prune in late spring after the first flush of new growth has hardened off. Because Boxwoods bloom on old wood, pruning too early in the spring may remove the tiny flowers, but since this plant is grown for its foliage, most gardeners prefer to focus on thinning out old branches to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring just as the new green tips begin to emerge. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or fall because this can stimulate soft new growth that won't have time to harden before the first frost. This tender growth is easily damaged by cold winter winds, which can lead to unsightly dieback in the spring.

Sprinter boxwoods arrived on schedule, healthy & intact. After an epic fail with Home Depot Green Mountain boxwood cuttings, I went on a search for mature Sprinters. I'm glad I found them, I was impressed with the size of the shrub in the #3 container. They stand upright approximately 18" tall, bushy with healthy full leaves. I got them mid June and they must have put on quite a bit of growth in May, I can still see the lighter green new growth. I wasn't expecting them to come in the Proven Winners containers either... nice! I'm confident they will do nicely this winter, I'm in zone 7.
