Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

Growing Zones 3-8
Cold hardy Rose with unique winter interest, the Therese Bugnet Rugosa Rose (Rosa 'Therese Bugnet') is a gorgeous Shrub Rose with large, red-violet to pale pink, double flowers that are highly fragrant and cover the lush green foliage from mid-June until frost!
The blue-green, long narrow foliage combined with the red fall color of the canes create an attractive addition to the landscape for year-round interest, especially when contrasted with snow! The fragrant blooms are highly attractive to pollinators and full of vital nectar and pollen resources for all beneficial insects! You'll love watching bumble bees forage around in the golden crowns of anthers at the center of each bloom!
This hybrid Rugosa Rose is grown on its own root giving it the advantage of being very resilient and adaptable! If winter's freezing temperatures kill the top growth, this Rose will simply grow back in the spring and will look the same as the one you purchased, good as new! Like other Rugosa Roses, Therese Bugnet displays showy red hips in the fall that birds love and you can dry for Vitamin C-rich tea.
As its origin in Canada in 1950 might suggest, Therese Bugnet is a true, chilly zone 3 plant and is heat-tolerant up to USDA growing zone 8. This plant is very hardy and forms a dense, upright, and mounded cluster of thorny canes 5-7 feet in height and 4-5 feet in width.
Planting and Application:
Use Therese Bugnet as a Landscaping Shrub Roses as a border or hedge that few will want to tangle with! Ideal for seasonal screening and sheltering birds as it stays fully leafed and densely filled to the ground. Fantastic backdrops to your Rose and Cottage garden, defining property edges and creating private outdoor rooms.
From Butterfly gardens to specimen plantings, these shrubs shine throughout the four seasons, lending their beauty in a different way spring, summer, fall, and winter! These Shrub Roses are perfect for all-purpose landscaping with their anything-but-all-purpose flowers! You can even limb-up the lower branches to expose the multi-stemmed form to create a unique tree-form Rose specimen!
- Reddish-Violet to Pinkish Double-Layered Blooms

#ProPlantTips for Care:
This Rugosa Landscape Rose will grow in part shade, but not bloom anywhere near as much as in the full sun. So for the best blooms, the most blooms, and the best fall-colored canes, plant in a location with good air circulation and 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Roses need well-drained soil that is enriched and organic with regular moisture access. Help hold in moisture more evenly with a 3-4 inch layer of mulch over the entire root system.
Therese Bugnet blooms on last year's wood so wait until they bloom in June, and then you can prune the stems as needed. This Rose appreciates a renewal pruning every 3-5 years - cut the oldest, fattest stems out to the ground, leaving the younger thinner stems in place. You'll enjoy increased flowering on the newer, more vigorous stems later in the summer into fall.
- Full Sun Best
- Regular Moisture
- Well-Drained Enriched Soil
- Prune After Flowering
- Grown On Own Root
