Cold hardy Rose with unique winter interest, the Therese Bugnet Rugosa Rose (Rosa 'Therese Bugnet') is a gorgeous Shrub Rose with large, red-violet to pale pink, double flowers that are highly fragrant and cover the lush green foliage from mid-June until frost!

The blue-green, long narrow foliage combined with the red fall color of the canes create an attractive addition to the landscape for year-round interest, especially when contrasted with snow! The fragrant blooms are highly attractive to pollinators and full of vital nectar and pollen resources for all beneficial insects! You'll love watching bumble bees forage around in the golden crowns of anthers at the center of each bloom!

This hybrid Rugosa Rose is grown on its own root giving it the advantage of being very resilient and adaptable! If winter's freezing temperatures kill the top growth, this Rose will simply grow back in the spring and will look the same as the one you purchased, good as new! Like other Rugosa Roses, Therese Bugnet displays showy red hips in the fall that birds love and you can dry for Vitamin C-rich tea.

As its origin in Canada in 1950 might suggest, Therese Bugnet is a true, chilly zone 3 plant and is heat-tolerant up to USDA growing zone 8. This plant is very hardy and forms a dense, upright, and mounded cluster of thorny canes 5-7 feet in height and 4-5 feet in width.

Planting and Application:

Use Therese Bugnet as a Landscaping Shrub Roses as a border or hedge that few will want to tangle with! Ideal for seasonal screening and sheltering birds as it stays fully leafed and densely filled to the ground. Fantastic backdrops to your Rose and Cottage garden, defining property edges and creating private outdoor rooms.

From Butterfly gardens to specimen plantings, these shrubs shine throughout the four seasons, lending their beauty in a different way spring, summer, fall, and winter! These Shrub Roses are perfect for all-purpose landscaping with their anything-but-all-purpose flowers! You can even limb-up the lower branches to expose the multi-stemmed form to create a unique tree-form Rose specimen!

  • Reddish-Violet to Pinkish Double-Layered Blooms
  • Fragrant Shrub Rose
  • Dense Leafy Blue-Green Foliage & Upright Growth
  • Dramatic Red Canes in Winter
  • Hedges, Backdrops, Borders, Screening & Pollinator Gardens

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This Rugosa Landscape Rose will grow in part shade, but not bloom anywhere near as much as in the full sun. So for the best blooms, the most blooms, and the best fall-colored canes, plant in a location with good air circulation and 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Roses need well-drained soil that is enriched and organic with regular moisture access. Help hold in moisture more evenly with a 3-4 inch layer of mulch over the entire root system.

Therese Bugnet blooms on last year's wood so wait until they bloom in June, and then you can prune the stems as needed. This Rose appreciates a renewal pruning every 3-5 years - cut the oldest, fattest stems out to the ground, leaving the younger thinner stems in place. You'll enjoy increased flowering on the newer, more vigorous stems later in the summer into fall.

  • Full Sun Best
  • Regular Moisture
  • Well-Drained Enriched Soil
  • Prune After Flowering
  • Grown On Own Root

Gorgeous blooms and versatility in the landscape, fall in love with the four-season interest and cold-hardiness that the Therese Bugnet Rugosa Rose offers your garden! Order today from NatureHills.com!

Resilient beauty

I bought 6 Therese Bougnet from a Michigan nursery in 1990! I transplanted them since 3 times. They not only survived it, but grew and bloomed with profusion of bright pink, fragrant flowers. They carry on after blustery Illinois winters. They were inundated by Japanese beetles for several summers. Once I almost killed them with pesticides and then learned to just pick beetles by hand and drown them in the jar with soapy water. No chemicals after that. I fertilize them with compost and put mulch on top. Pruning and cutting dead canes in spring. That’s all I need to do for the beautiful and fragrant roses that lasted for so many years.

Very easy care!

I received Therese Bugnet as a wedding gift 18 years ago and planted her in my mom’s front yard. She gets very little, if any care and she has grown to 10’! She is huge! I would say that she is just as wide and blooms profusely! Her blossoms are very fragrant. I would describe the scent as spicy rose. You don’t have to be near it to smell it. Just lovely.

Dear Karin,

Thank you so much for sharing your heartwarming experience with the Therese Bugnet Hybrid Rugosa Rose! It’s wonderful to hear that this beautiful, fragrant rose has thrived so generously without much fuss—or lovingly called “easy care.” Growing to such a magnificent size and blooming profusely for 18 years is a true testament to its hardiness and your care in choosing such a special variety.

The spicy fragrance you described is indeed one of the rose’s signature charms, and it sounds like a lovely historic garden feature for your mom’s front yard. If you ever want to maintain its size or shape just a bit more, occasional late winter pruning to remove old, weak stems can give it fresh vigor, but as you’ve experienced, Bugnet roses truly flourish with minimal intervention.

Please feel free to reach out if you desire any tips on companion planting or long-term care to keep this rose thriving. Thanks again for nurturing such a beautiful gift and sharing your story with our community.

Dear Karin,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with the Therese Bugnet Hybrid Rugosa Rose! We’re truly delighted to hear that this beautiful rose has thrived so wonderfully in your mom’s yard for 18 years with minimal care. It’s incredible that she’s grown to such impressive size and blooms so profusely, all while filling the air with that delightful spicy fragrance you described so vividly. Roses like the Therese Bugnet are known for their hardiness and resistance, which seems to be perfectly showcased in your garden!

If you’re ever interested in helping your rose maintain her health and encourage more blooms, occasional pruning in early spring and feeding with a balanced rose fertilizer can boost vigor, though it sounds like she’s doing just fine with nature taking the lead. Keeping an eye on the soil to ensure it’s well-drained and mulching around the base can help preserve moisture and protect roots through the seasons.

Thank you again for such a heartwarming review! It’s stories like yours that inspire us and other gardeners to cherish and nurture their treasured plants.
