Description
Elegant bundles of blooms, the Minnetonka Rhododendron (Rhododendron 'Minnetonka') produces an abundance of elegant light purple flowers and has dark green foliage, this combination creates a stunning site in the landscape! Minnetonka's delicate blooms begin as a red-violet bud and then open to a light purple and are covered with vivid orange-yellow spots on the upper petal, flowers will literally cover this low-growing hybrid in mid-season!
With gorgeous green broad-leaved evergreen foliage to highlight the lovely light purple blooms, these are fantastic rounded shrubs. The shape of the mature plant is slightly wider than tall, which presents a formal appearance to the garden. Minnetonka is known as an outstanding hardy, compact, low growing Rhododendron.
And of course, don't forget about your flying neighbors - all your local butterflies will come over to visit, and you will even see the occasional Hummingbird! This plant is perfect for foundation plantings or smaller gardens! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8 and grows to a 3-4 foot height while spreading into a 4-5 foot wide width. #ProPlantTips For Care
Rhododendrons will tolerate full sun, especially up north. However, they'll grow best in partial shade. Although it thrives in cooler regions, it's a good idea to give them protection from the worst of the strong winter winds. This easy-care Rhododendron needs excellent drainage, mulching, and a peat moss soil additive. Roots will rot in poorly drained soil, so well-drained soil is a must! Minnetonka requires regular watering, particularly in hot, dry weather, established plants can benefit from fertilization. You'll then bring a three-inch layer of mulch up around the base of the plant. Last, pull the mulch back away from touching the stems. Water consistently during the first season. Thereafter, you'll want to give them regular deep drinks when the weather gets dry.
Prune to shape, but wait until after the blooms are finished! Don't wait too long, as you might accidentally trim off next year's flowers. Weed your plantings regularly. Avoid underplanting near your Roseum Elegans Rhododendron to give the roots room to spread. Feed with slow-release fertilizer for acid-loving, ericaceous plants. Follow the label directions for timing and application rates.
