Arrived in good condition

Arrived in good condition. So far, it’s still alive

A Norway Spruce that arrives healthy and stays that way is a good start. These trees do take a season or so to settle in and put on real growth, so patience pays off. Thanks for planting with us, Myleen.

Norway Spruce, Zone 7 high desert Utah

I planted 5 a year ago in June. They're doing great. Very nice looking tree and growing fast, not as fast as the Eastern white pines I got at the same time. Deer ate 1 side of one of them but it is surviving OK. I think it will do just fine. I spaced them out more than recommended as I'm filling a space about 2 acres and using them as a back drop for some Colorado Green Spruce, which are smaller. I think it will look pretty nice in 5 - 10 years.

Hi Tom,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful update on your Norway Spruce trees! It’s fantastic to hear that they’re doing well and growing steadily in Utah’s Zone 7 high desert climate. Your thoughtful spacing and pairing with Colorado Green Spruce sound like they’ll create a stunning backdrop as the years go by.

It’s great that your affected tree is recovering despite the deer nibbling—deer often focus on one side first, so protecting young trees with physical barriers like tree guards or repellents can help minimize future damage and support healthy growth.

If you ever want advice on deer protection or particular care techniques especially suited for your area’s conditions, we're always happy to assist!

Wishing you happy planting,

They're doing very well after 1 year.

I planted 5 last spring. They're doing very well. Deer mostly leave them alone, they nibbled on one but didn't destroy it. Looks like they grow pretty fast. I got them as a background tree with smaller spruce toward the front.

Hello Tom,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the trees you planted last spring! We're delighted to hear they are thriving and that the deer have mostly left them alone—that’s always great news. Using them as a background tree with smaller spruces up front sounds like a fantastic layering strategy to create depth in your landscape.

If you ever have questions on fertilizing schedules or tips for protecting young plants further, especially from nibblers, feel free to reach out. We also have a detailed guide on deer-resistant landscaping on our website that might offer some helpful ideas as your trees continue to grow.

Two trees arrived leafed out and wilting. One looks ok. The other has some dieback. Difficulties at place of origin problem with soft new growth losing water. Leaders are not normal and will take two seasons to correct. JVF

Hi,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with your Norway Spruce trees. We’re sorry to hear that one of the trees arrived showing signs of wilting and dieback, and we truly appreciate your detailed insights about the challenges with those soft new growth leaders.

Wilting can sometimes occur during shipping, especially with delicate new growth, but it’s encouraging to hear that one tree looks okay and that the leader adjustments may improve over the next couple of seasons. To help support your trees through this recovery time, we recommend ensuring consistent watering (but avoiding overwatering), providing some protection from harsh sunlight if possible, and applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as the trees begin to recover. If you haven’t seen it already, our [Care Guide for Norway Spruce](https://www.naturehills.com/trees/norway-spruce-care) could offer some helpful tips tailored to this species.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out directly if you notice worsening conditions or if you have any other questions along the way — we’re always here to help guide you toward healthy, thriving trees.

Hello Guest,

Thank you so much for sharing your detailed feedback about your Norway Spruce trees. We sincerely appreciate you taking the time to let us know about the condition of your delivery and the challenges with the dieback and new growth. It’s understandable how concerning it must be to see one tree look less than ideal, especially when the leaders aren’t developing as expected.

The soft, new growth shedding water and the potential needed recovery period of a couple of seasons are not uncommon issues with trees transitioning from the nursery to a new environment, particularly for species like Norway Spruce. To help support your tree's recovery, we recommend consistent watering to prevent drought stress, especially in the hot, dry months, and a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote steady growth.

If you haven’t already, pruning back any clearly dead or damaged branches can encourage healthier new growth in the growing season ahead. Additionally, protecting the trees from strong winds or excessive sun exposure initially may reduce stress.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us directly—we’d be happy to provide more targeted care advice or explore any other support options that can assist your trees in adjusting to their new home. Your success with the plants truly matters to us!

Fast growing

I am using Norway spruce for a tree line windbreak. I purchased them from Nature Hills 4 years ago and they are 6 feet tall already. Fast growers for a spruce tree,

Hello Spiker,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with your Norway Spruce trees! We’re delighted to hear that your windbreak is thriving and reaching 6 feet in just four years—that’s a great rapid growth for these evergreens. Norway Spruces do make fantastic, sturdy windbreaks due to their rapid growth and dense foliage.

If you're interested in ensuring continued healthy growth, a consistent watering schedule during dry spells and an occasional application of a balanced fertilizer can give your trees an extra boost. Mulching around the base is also helpful for retaining moisture and protecting roots. If you ever want to expand or need assistance with any other tree selections, feel free to reach out.

Thanks again for choosing Nature Hills and for updating us on your progress!
